From the point of view of Demoncrats in positions of power, this is the perfect storm. Already last year they were caught publicly wishing for a stock market crash to "hurt Trump". We also have the sister of the key person peddling the Russian meddling hoax at a key position at the CDC spouting political nonsense when it should have been science. The CDC has much to answer for. They've got no excuses for allowing this to get out of hand, for refusing to do more tests, for refusing to allow independent testing when they fell flat on their faces (where they still are BTW, they've yet to deliver the 1.5 million tests promised). They actually want this to get worse, not better, just to have "their team" in power again. Seems psychotic? They're sociopaths, a single death is a tragedy, a million deaths is a statistic. To a true sociopath, this disease is a great opportunity to shave the Social Security rolls. 

No wonder they're having private meetings, America would be appalled at the incompetence being demonstrated by these holdovers from the last administration in positions of power who can't be fired because of the 1963 Civi Service Act. The leadership can be fired, but they're irrelevant, it's the worker bees who are the culprits

CDC has been in full sabotage mode since the start of the pandemic. Their record of tripping over themselves at every step, particularly in the testing policy and test development, is beyond bad policy. It reeks of deliberate sabotage to create mayhem and promote the spread of the disease. Presumably because the CDC is a 95% Democrat bureaucracy as are all their counterparts in Washington DC. Among Dems, "never Trump" seems more important than anything else, including the agency's mission.

The NSC would be just as likely to be a conspirator in sabotaging the response, giving the White House bad advice deliberately. What is true is that the WH is concerned about the "officialdom" of the CDC and HHS deliberately sabotaging the economy with fanning wild hysteria, and having opportunity to circumvent effective responses by knowing what they are ahead of implementation. Same way the State Department Medical director sabotaged Trump's exclusion policy to avoid bringing in infected patients from abroad, bringing in two plane loads of mixed infected and non infected people with no medical or CDC teams to meet them..

See, here's the problem. There is no evidence in the NSC sabotaging the response, but there is ample evidence about the WH focusing on the economic impacts and the loyalty of his aides to Trump rather than focusing on curtailing the epidemic.

What we know:

• Trump fired the pandemic response team in 2018
• The WH has overruled the CDC/HHS on advice and a flight, which it first denied and then came clean on
• The WH has (unusually) classified discussions about the coronavirus so that it can ensure the message stays on point

We know CDC has botched things. We don't know what the cause is yet and you can be sure there will be an investigation into it.

If you have evidence that a random person is actively sabotaging the WH then let us see it. With no evidence, it's just a conspiracy theory that should just be ignored.

It was a "conspiracy" theory that the Obama administration was spying on the Trump campaign. Now everyone and their dog knows they were spying, but still no investigation! The way Washington DC works, they'll drag everything out until there's a new administration, then quietly bury everything.

Just read the business insider article. It clearly shows the JAPANESE were calling all the shots. This is Trump's fault how? Does Trump now run the Japanese health department too? 

Then we have this fiction from Time:

The CDC hasn't botched anything. This was a typical Made-in-China virus that no one saw coming. The CDC can't keep a bunch of virus-testing kits sitting around. These coronaviruses mutate randomly and often. We have had SARS, Avian Flu, Swine Flu, many variations of the above, and now this. 

The CDC is probably the finest example of a bunch of dedicated people working to keep a passive bunch of deplorables alive and well. I have had dealings with the CDC for fifty years and never heard anything political. The CDC of the United States of America leads the world. If we have a single person to blame for this, well, just go look in the mirror.

We in America, and probably in Canada and Australia and the UK as well as the whole of Europe, have become accustomed to good solid products manufactured in China. It didn't take a genius to figure out that all these weird and unusual viruses that scared our collective pants off were being hatched in China. We even knew how: the CDC told us that wet markets, whereby braid snakes are stacked atop fruit bats, next to the rats and civet cats, were promoting the jumping of single-stranded viruses from one species into another, and that occasionally, lo and behold, the damn thing jumped into a person's DNA. The race was on.

The industrial sector didn't choose to do anything about that--just ask Apple. The CDC reported all this to the higher-ups: George W, Obama, Trump. They didn't feel like they could do much because doing much would interrupt the national and perhaps even the global economy. 

So, what will happen when we get through this? Not a damn thing! Apple will go on with their supply chain, as will the solar boys and the Tesla plants. The wet markets will go on doing what they do: breeding new viruses. 

This thing was a hard hit into left field. It just happened to occur on Trump's watch. The CDC is reacting the best it can to a lousy situation. Tony Fauci is a consummate professional. There's probably someone to blame out there, but I don't believe they work at the CDC.

I'll agree to disagree. I have no doubt there are low level hard working people at the CDC, but botching the test kits AND REFUSING TO LET INDUSTRY AND ACADEMIA PICK UP THE SLACK amounted to criminal stupidity or political sabotage or both. Sorry but that's the read. Take a look at the article linked above. I know someone who works at that lab, denied permission to do the testing which they did anyway, possibly saving countless lives!

The first batch of tests the CDC sent out didn't work and they are still far behind where they need to be in producing the tests. At this point, though, it's not clear why the tests were faulty nor why they didn't allow the WHO/German tests to be used.

The President of the United States can hire precisely 0.13% of the people who ostensibly "work for him". The problem isn't the tiny number of people he can hire the problem are the countless people under them whom nobody can fire! On top of that, as already mentioned, because the Demoncrats you worship refuse to vote on the appointment approvals, we have the ridiculous situation that half Trump's appointments are there temporarily. Just how much influence does an acting director have over the mutinous troops under him?

Okay, I'm not sure how many of you have ever worn the medical equivalent of a Hazmat suit. If you work in a busy ER, you'll see about 100 patients a shift, and maybe seven or eight will have fever. Someone has to take their temperature. That someone, despite wearing a mask, is likely going to get the virus. 

Then a red flag goes up. Suddenly everyone in contact with that patient has to wear a Hazmat suit. The patient is tested. Everyone has to disrobe--it's hard to do that without contaminating yourself. Then you repeat that process seven or eight times, and you get sloppy. The actual percentage of medical personnel that can gown, mask, suit and glove up and remove without contamination is about 1%. 

And those Hazmat suited up people leading a gurney out with a patient within a bubble containment unit? Those are the people who loaded the patient into it, so they're mostly contaminated. They then proceed to contaminate most every surface they come into contact with. 

If you culture in a petri dish your fingernail detritus, 100 out of 100 people will grow coliform bacteria . . . fecal contaminants. You can wash your hands all you wish with soap and water, but unless you actually scrub your fingernails with a brush, you're going to grow coliforms. A simple 8:1 water:bleach dipping solution will take care of that but no one mentions that. They all share Puracell from CVS, which by the way is a pretty good place to pick up the virus as a door prize.

Tony Fauci knows all these things. Yes, his epidemic response team was gutted on Trump's watch, but what was he supposed to do, keep 330 million novel coronavirus testing kits in the corner? The response has been just fine. Every person who happens to know a doctor or a nurse in the US is going to have a story about how someone was just sloppily missed. But when you look at the number of cases of infection in the US, and the number of deaths, it's damn near miraculous. This will probably get worse, because people are herd animals and they go to the CPAC and parties and ride in the elevator and pick their noses. But still, the numbers heretofore have been stellar.

I was watching CNN this morning and some Congressman from Virginia was patting himself on the back for ‘self quarantining’ himself and his wife once they discovered that they had been in contact with a colleague who had tested positive. He then went on to say that he had attended a town hall meeting the night before! Now maybe he attended via Skype or some other means...but he did not say that.

While the professional capabilities and will are there at the professional level, the top layers that make the decisions did horribly. They didn't test. They forbade testing by private labs, they flubbed the test they did design. Hoarded the test kits when they were finally available in numbers so nobody had one that could be done on site. And gave idiotic testing guidelines that amounted to "not looking". There is no internal penalty in the civil service based on professional behavior. Not for falsifying scientific reports or data, fake intelligence, etc. you just need not be caught in blatant treason or insubordination, or diddling colleagues. 

Nobody thinks about the weird viruses coming out of China just as they try to avoid thinking about the CCP that runs the place with ruthless suppression. They will now. Actuaries have memories. They will be referring to the outbreak's costs in business interruption insurance claims for decades and it will cost more to run a supply chain through China than the 25% tariffs. Insurers will demand substitute sources and large stockpiles to write any policies with a supply chain component in China. Can I play devil's advocate?

China shut down for a month while we in the west scoffed at them and dithered in our own preparedness plans. Up until now, the US has played a role in every significant world crisis for 80 years. Because of the complete ineptitude shown with COVID19, China now looks impressively stable and capable in comparison.

China managed to take a virus that had infected hundreds of thousands of people and shut it down heavy-handedly but early. China will get infected again because the west has refused to act. We don't know how long Europe and America will be shut down for.

China may yet end up being the safer partner to trade with in terms of crisis management.

Rudy Gobert could have potentially spread the disease he reportedly tested positive for two days later

Rudy Gobert became the first NBA player to test positive for coronavirus on Wednesday, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic, and while the league moved swiftly to suspend the season afterward, Gobert's actions before any decisions were made has caused some alarm in the basketball world. 

With the NBA recently banning media from accessing locker rooms, players have begun fulfilling their media obligations at the podium. Gobert did so at Monday's Utah Jazz shootaround. Afterward, he proceeded to touch every microphone on the stage, seemingly sending a message about his fearlessness in regards to the disease. It is unknown just how many people came into contact with those microphones after Gobert.

Gobert was ruled out of Wednesday's game earlier with what the Jazz termed as an "illness," which later grew into the reported positive test for coronavirus. The Jazz released a statement Wednesday night explaining the situation without naming Gobert:

After the game between the Utah Jazz and Oklahoma City Thunder was postponed, players for both teams were quarantined in their locker rooms, according to Tony Jones of The Athletic. Jones revealed that he himself would not be traveling out of Oklahoma City and that he planned to get tested. 

The NBA reportedly planned initially to continue playing games with empty arenas, however, Gobert's diagnosis proved the fallibility of that strategy. If even one player was infected, it would force everyone on his team and who he played against into quarantine. Suspending the season was the right call, but in letting the Jazz and Thunder take the floor, it might have come too late. There is no telling how far the disease has spread within the league now.

How exactly did the US health system ‘bungle’?

How could they have had enough testing kits on hand for a specific virus that nobody knew anything about? How do you justify a quarantine when you do not know what you are quarantining against. Lack of info from China didn’t help matters.

So, as you are playing ‘Monday morning quarterback’, please tell me EXACTLY how the US bungled things.
