How to Sell Oil Under Sanctions

Recommended Posts

Great story this week from OP about how Iran skirted sanctions with help from Turkey:

https://oilprice.com/Geopolitics/International/Irans-Elaborate-Sanction-Skirting-Scheme.html

The [Turkish] national company bought Iranian gas, deposited the money in special accounts in Halkbank, and then it was taken from these accounts and put into shell companies by [money-launderer] Zarrib, who then used the money to buy gold and sell it through international banks, skirting sanctions, turning the gold into hard currency and sending it on to Tehran.

Surprised Zarrib is still alive ... some Iranians and Turks would have loved to get their hands on him before he testified.

Indeed! Zarrib (also Zarrab) is an Azeri-Iranian businessman and when the US got their hands on him it was a major geopolitical tinderbox. Pretty grim for Turkish elite behind Halkbank. Turkey's been trying hard to find just about any geopolitical leverage that would get the US to extradite Zarrab rather than let him testify in the US.
