Alibaba has sent plane loads of PPE to the U.S.

Apple mfg partner Foxconn said they will mfg ventilators in the U.S.  (Where were they 3 months ago ? )

The Japanese are being both sage and prudent.  They are in an interesting dilemma:  the country is not reproducing, with a quite low fecundity rate, so there are these perpetual shortages of labor for everything.  That has led to the development of more automated machinery.  But to build that stuff, the Japanese have been getting in close with the Chinese, where the factories have limitless labor pools, albeit uneducated peasants from the countryside.   If you let yourself get dependent on that arrangement, then at some point it is going to seriously bite you.  I conclude that the Japanese see the writing on the wall, and will instead move factories back to Japan, and then import the needed labor as "Gastarbeiters," as Germany did with its Turkish guest-workers.  Where will those workers come from?  I predict:  the Philippines.

Foxconn is Taiwanese, not chinese, FYI. Their biggest manufacturing presence is in China (in Shenzhen), but they're also Taiwan's largest employer and have plants in a number of other countries.

Point well taken, just pointing out that Foxconn is domiciled, managed, and governed largely out of a entity (the ROC) whose governance structures had little to do with anything surrounding the virus (the PRC). Taiwan doesn't need to do any sort of "damage control".

This btw is how supply chain works, where diversification is the key. China bought masks/received donations from other countries when its own supply chain was knocked out. Now that our/European factories are knocked out, the Chinese/Taiwanese/Japanese/ South Korean factories are slowly coming back on line to help.

From a supply chain point of view, it is never wise to put all eggs in one basket. From a political point of view, no one cares though.
