Starting a thread to highlight the backlash against overly restrictive rules issued by elected representatives.  As an example of overly restrictive and arbitrary restrictions, here in Michigan, it is oddly prohibited to purchase garden seeds.  Madness.  Victory Gardens have a long history in the U.S.  To ban seeds for Victory Gardens is unacceptable.

Charlie Kirk calls on Students for Trump members to launch 'peaceful rebellion against governors' over stay-at-home orders

As protests against stay-at-home orders due to novel coronavirus break out around the country, Students for Trump, one of the main political groups backing President Donald Trump's reelection, is calling on its young members to join the efforts.

During a virtual convention on Friday for Students for Trump, the college campus arm of Turning Point USA, the group's founder Charlie Kirk urged members to launch a "peaceful rebellion against governors" in states like Michigan and Wisconsin.

Kirk, speaking to over 500 members of the conservative nonprofit organization geared at activating college students to reelect the president who tuned in to the event, derided governors like Michigan's Gretchen Whitmer for encroaching on their rights and urged them to join the protests around the country. The event was hosted on Zoom.

It's not immediately clear if any protests have been organized due to Kirk's comments.

"Peaceful is the operative word. Charlie is simply calling on Americans to exercise their First Amendment right to peacefully push back against the arbitrary overreaches of certain governors who are prohibiting completely safe activities," a spokesman for Kirk told ABC News in a statement. "Americans have patriotically and heroically unified to slow the spread, and now Charlie believes it's time to let our political leaders know that it's time to open the country back up."

Kirk is a favorite of the president and appeared at the White House for a "Generation Next Summit" in 2018. He's also routinely retweeted by the president, and recently wrote a book titled "The MAGA Doctrine."

The Trump campaign declined to comment, but a senior official noted that the group isn't a official coalition.  ...

My thoughts:

It is 19 April 2020 today, so it is 1 month since COVID-19 epidemic is without control in the United States.

I look at it as a complete anarchy, failure of the authorities both Republican and Democratic, so focused on winning election and so partisan that they forgot why they were elected/chosen in their first place. 2 party system, you cannot vote them out, it is very similar to China.

Every day it is a death toll like in  9/11 in US but there is no sensible narrative yet, no co-operation.

Only partisan fight and blaming outsiders.

Sense of chaos, this situation is extreme. And extreme situation causes extreme actions of many people also state and local authorities.

Cause they are so lost.

I am curious where US will be in 1 month on 19 May 2020 ?

How do you think ?

How many new cases each day ?

How many new deaths each day ?

What would be the state of the economy ?

Amazing stuff.  At one time in the past, there were these videos of college women on Spring Break, called "Girls Gone Wild!"   It depicted girls, typically drunk, doing ridiculous things, mostly involving taking clothes off and chest-flashing the crowd.   Now, we have the (above) videos of the cops in Greenville, Mississippi, saying "Your Constitutional rights are suspended!"   What a moron. The question remains:  did he get all C's in high school, or did he flunk out in the tenth grade?  What do we call this:  "Cops gone Wild?" 

Readers might note that the Governor of Michigan is so into micro-commanding the citizens of her State that her Order says, "You can go out on the Lake  (presumably Lakes Michigan and Huron, maybe the other inland lakes in the State, who knows?) in a kayak or paddleboard, but you cannot go out in a boat with a motor."  Now, does that not take the cake?   Who elects these crazies?

We have it pretty good here in fort mcmurray. The "lockdowns" are being treated very liberally, as in nothing is being enforced. Tom mentioned seeds being non essential. Well the last time I went shopping here they had garden decorations and pots and home accessories spilling out into the parking lot and lining all the aisles. Malls, barbers, salons, virtually everything is open. And people are out and about doing whatever. Half the stores dont enforce lineups or maximum occupants. You try to stay 6 feet apart from people and that's it business as usual. 

 

The situation on oil sands sites right now is very different. You might be mistaken in believing a nuclear plant melted down. The last time I had to go on site I thought the girl wearing a haz suit and medical face shield wanted to put a thermometer in my ass. She put it in my mouth instead, should I be relieved? There is so much mitigation practices being rolled out I couldn't fit everything here, but one I thought was quite clever was the addition of  breath and exhaling to the "line of fire" life saving rule. Now not only should you not stand under suspended loads or behind a backing up vehicle, but your mouth should not be pointed at the person you are speaking to. Getting in a word sideways is an actual thing now, and I myself have noticed that I tend to hold my breath when walking past someone in a hallway. 

At least there is a glimmer of normalcy in town. The stuff we gotta do for a paycheck man, I question if it's still worth it. Its soul crushing sometimes.

Actually, I have never heard of Charlie Kirk before, so I can't really comment about him.

I had many tabs open on my computer, looking at numerous stories about the protests, and randimly chose this one, probably because it already had a screencap.  Which means I didn't have to take a screencap and copy & paste it into paint and crop it and save it.  Just being lazy I guess.  There were lots of other stories I could have chose, but this just happens to be the one I selected.

On the bright side, protests are now sprouting up all over the place, so many that I can't even keep track of them.

I saw some of Charlie Kirk's Twitter posts lately. He is obviously a big Trump supporter and somewhat biased in the sense that Trump cannot do wrong according to him. But from what I saw he did some good work exposing the double standards of the MSM as far as overlooking crimes by democrats but completely smearing Republicans for the same or similar crimes.

Montana County Demands People Wear Government-Issued Arm Bands To Do Business

In what might be one of the most over-the-top and draconian responses to coronavirus yet seen in Montana, Valley County is mandating that people wear government-issued pink arm bands in under to purchase products inside of stores. The measure, enforced by the Valley County Health Department, insists that store-owners keep customers out unless they have the pink arm-bands, which denote the customer has been in the area more than 14 days and submitted to quarantine protocol.

According to the flier produced by the Valley County Health Department, out-of-towners who lack the government-issued armbands will be prohibited from stores and residents are notified to call law enforcement if they do not comply.

The health department even issued a script to warn customers to flee, saying, “You are violating our Governor’s and Valley County’s Health Officer’s orders. I am happy to shop for you with curbside delivery. I will get the items for you and bring them to your car. If you don’t cooperate, you will force me to call law enforcement.”

Brian Burleson asked in the comments section of their Facebook page, “How do we know if they’re from out of town in the first place. Will they be wearing a large scarlet “O” on their chest?” It appears the answer is that out-of-town workers are mandated to stop at the health department, where they will ostensibly receive the arm bands.

China utilizes wristbands to track coronavirus patients. It has GPS monitoring and is used to make sure that patients comply with quarantine mandates. For many Montanans, it’s strange to see similar measures to prevent out-of-area essential workers from being able to purchase their supplies at local retailers.

I think the opening up of low infection rate areas in the largely Republican low density states will embarrass the Dems into looking like they are opening up. But the resumption of vitality in the spread out middle of the country will show Dem state residents what they are missing. Witmer is toast. I expect the state to go Red. Her laundry list of restriction looks like total nonsense. 

Besides which the entire shutdown was both anti-productive and orders of magnitude more severe than necessary to control the spread. "flatten the curve" is not exactly a legitimate purpose - flat means no new cases. A lower slope is what you wanted. No new cases now means many new cases later. So you want a steady stream of cases till many of the people are exposed. Then when the rate dies down naturally, as epidemics do, you can have a resistant community that will only propagate new outbreaks slowly, like a normal Flu.

As to this being a normal flu, it isn't. Prison outbreaks show 100% or near 100% infections among both staff and inmates in single building prisons and 41% infection in one large 2600 inmate complex essentially the entire building gets infected . Nothing of the sort happens in normal flu. Some portion of the population just don't get it. 40% are entirely asymptomatic. 40% mildly ill for a day or two.. In the large prison case, the original known case left on Mar 24 for sick leave so the entire wing he worked at was infected within 3 weeks or less. 1057 people. First positive test Apr 3.  

As far as mortality, Flu season has about 400 deaths per day at its height on a bad season. Avg, 329 for the 6 months. Current rates are at 1500/d down from 2000 per day. That makes it more deadly the first pass through than a flu. As nobody has any specific resistance to it, only general immune function. For the most part that is far less than deadly for anyone without particular complicating factors. The high risk population of octogenarians has a 10% CFR .  It was 7% for confirmed cases in NYC. It is already at 0.1% for NYC for overall deaths in the population. Vs. Flu at 0.02%. Up to 0.1% of Flu cases die. So the biggest question is how many are infected. If as I suspect, most everybody in NYC is infected, then the infection is indeed as deadly as a bad flu season. Future seasons of it should be less deadly.
