The World Health Organisation declared COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic on 11 March. The virus was first registered in China's Hubei province last December, later spreading across the world. Lockdowns and social distancing is a practice that has been used in times of pandemics for a long time, their effect is very well argued and explained. Everytime there is an expert community who agree on some practice and you as an outsider have the impression they got it all wrong (probably because it affects you in a way you don't like), it's time to step back and give it another thought - it's quite probably that they are right and it's you who overlooked something. And no, clumsily re-inventing the wheel by cherrypicking a few facts while ignoring others is not "independent thinking", true independent thinkers must respect all the facts, not just those that are convenient. Of course you're allowed to disagree with Bill Gates. Having a robust debate is important. To defend Gates and his foundation, I think there has been a lot of undue attacks on his motivations. Some of the largest initiatives at the Gates foundation over the years had historically zero commercial value. It's stuff that have needed capital investment to fix, but since there has no money in it, it's hard to attract private sector money. IMHO, they've filled a very interesting niche because unlike a lot of public institutions, they try to drive these types of efforts with private-sector like efficiency and a thought to incentive creation in all the entrepreneurial efforts they fund. The person making money isn't Bill Gates.
