Aftermath "Maria": Puerto Rico Is Closing 283 Schools As A Result Of Students Drop

Recommended Posts

Puerto Rico's Department of Education announced Thursday that it will close 283 schools this summer following a sharp drop in enrollment amid the island's long economic slump and the continued departure of families after Hurricane Maria. Education Secretary Julia Keleher said there would be no layoffs, with teachers and other employees being reassigned to other schools as part of a fiscal plan that aims to save the department some $150 million. Outstanding public education and higher education accessible to everyone is what makes a nation strong, smart, innovative,  and great.  Anything that undermines an outstanding public education system undermines the country, in it's a really, really, last call for help PR.

From before they have problem with number of students. School closings have been debated over the last 5 years previous to Maria as enrollment have declined 20-25% due to exodus to USA because of our economic problems. Maria has speed up this.

Expected. And I'm not sure it has anything to do with the hurricaneThe drop in enrollment comes as roughly a half million people have fled Puerto Rico for the U.S. mainland in the past decade during the long recession, including an estimated 135,000 since Hurricane Maria in September. Puerto Rico closed 150 schools from 2010 to 2015, and last year announced it would be closing another 179 schools.

Make no mistake, Puerto Rico is still very much in crisis. This is one more proof about that. Crisis is their permanent  way of life.

The rich want Puerto Rico for a luxury resort destination. But the Ricans gotta go. That's why nobody is helping to rebuild. They know that eventually the island will depopulate. Nature has done the rest of job....
