Contradiction - Portugal Is Producing 103% of Renewables, But Still Depends On Fossil Fuels

Portugal generated 103% of its electricity demands from renewable energy for the month of March, further establishing the country as a pioneer in the field. For two 70-hour time spans during the month, all electricity was supplied by renewables, primarily from wind turbines and hydropower. The rest of the month’s energy came predominantly from renewables with fossil fuels filling in supply gaps. With these breakthroughs, Portugal is approaching its goal of generating 60% of its energy from renewable sources by 2020. But, FF are still too dominant.

Sometimes too much energy is generated (a lot sunny days) and the excess gets lost because storage capabilities for renewables are still in their early stages. This problem is made worse by Portugal’s lack of coordination with the rest of the European Union.. So, this is two of many problems on this field... Country not participated in energy sharing networks, as other countries across the region do. Because of that can't able to distribute excess energy elsewhere and receive energy when needed.

Solar has large production potential in PT and Iberia, coupled with smart grids and green hydrogen - large potential. But they need investment and support. Without this, result in renewables will just stay as a good try...

That’s really encouraging. It does have a lot of sun in summer. If Portugal can do it why can’t the even sunnier countries do it? Ok. Someone could say: "They need a money". Renewables are cheaper than any other source of energy and if they said: "We have no money" - it's not a good excuse....

Big progress for a country aiming to switch completely to renewables by 2040. A living proof after Norway and Iceland that 100% renewable is feasible and doable. In same time, PT has a few times more sunny days than Norway or Iceland...

Their hydro has, like most developed countries, already reached it's maximum build-out of capacity. Solar made no difference. Wind capacity is unlikely to grow too much further. Alternative is nukes...
