Trump: "Larry, go get it done,'” - US to rejoin TPP

Recommended Posts

US President Donald Trump unexpectedly pointed his administration in a surprising direction: reopening Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) negotiations. “The president multiple times reaffirmed in general to all of us and looked right at Larry Kudlow and said, ‘Larry, go get it done,'” Senator Ben Sasse from Nebraska told reporters at the White House.

Speaking after a trade meeting with Trump, Republican senators said the president told White House National Economic Council Director Larry Kudlow and U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer to look into joining the deal,

Meanwhile, abandoning the agreement was one of Trump’s signature campaign promises and one of his first acts as president.

To my understanding the TPP was designed precisely to isolate China in that region and keep its influence down. And he pulled US out because...? Just sit still, order Chinese and touch nothing

On both the campaign trail and in office Trump had zero understanding of how global politics work. And now that he's starting a trade war with China he realizes that he has left the United States completely exposed.

I think we have to face some facts. Trump couldn't even re-negotiate Stormy Daniels contract

Next thing he is going to realize is that we actually need immigrants.

Well, leaving TPP has left many American farmers upset that they're missing out on the export opportunities that countries such as Canada, Mexico and Australia get from the TPP.

haha. we are being schooled by New Zealand. New Zealand, people. You know, imaginary island with talking trees, high tower, Sam and Frodo

It is extremely difficult to take out one part and renegotiate, a point that was underscored by New Zealand. If the United States genuinely wished to reenter, that would trigger another process of engagement and negotiation. It's not simply a matter of slotting into an existing deal, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said.

and Australian Trade Minister Steven Ciobo said that "there isn't an appetite for any substantial renegotiation in any material way of the TPP"

I think everyone needs to get used to Trump's negotiating tactics. First of all, rejoining the TPP is in everyone's favor. Secondly, the members of the TPP can pretend all they want that they're going to play hardball, but at the end of the day, the US is hugely important to this deal. When they withdrew, it severely scaled down the prospects of the TPP. Thirdly, everyone knows that the TPP is a major weapon against China. So, it is what it is. Headlines love to focus on the inconsistencies in Trump's 'policies' and his tweets. But those inconsistencies are exactly the point--that's the negotiating tactic, and in this case it's going to work.

Twitterstorm aside and circus-like back-and-forth as well, I'd like to see the US join the TPP. This is one of the best ways to work toward strong trade and balance out China. I think maybe he just realized that ... and then right after he realized that, he also had another thought that didn't make it out before he sent his peeps off to 'get it done'. The US actually does have negotiating power here and it's hugely important to the TPP.

Everyone, please, keep in mind that Donald Trump is an astute negotiator who learned this skill in both formal and informal education, and in application throughout the world in pursuing mulitimillion-dollar real estate business deals. His experience substantially exceeds the abilities of the majority of professional politicians who typically try to and/or fail to negotiate for fear of confronting, and their inherent propensity to prevaricate in actually negotiating with adversaries.

Additionally, since the pro-globalist/pro-Marxist major media is his foremost adversary, Mr. Trump uses Tweeting to control and to manipulate them to his favor. In other words, his Tweets are NOT spontaneous, but instead are cogently composed to facilitate his advancement of his Make- America-Great-Again anti-Marxist/anti-globalist agenda.

Absolutely true.   As someone who also has negotiated with adversarial untrustworthy scoundrels in various s---h--- parts of the world, i also recognize his skills - which are largely unknown in WDC and are a real shock to its amateurs.

TPP would have a been a major weapon against China in the trade war he's started.

Trump filed for bankruptcy six times. All six times he asked the court to let him get out of keeping his promises. MAGA

But Trump's "do it, don't do it" wavering on TPP and his latest "no" doesn't necessarily mean 'no', as we have seen in the recent past. Could be just another negotiating tactic for more concessions. The rest of the TPP members will probably play ball. They want it badly enough.
