The U.S. Department of Commerce is banning American companies from selling components to Chinese telecom equipment maker ZTE Corp for seven years for violating the terms of a sanctions violation case, U.S. officials told Reuters.A five-year federal investigation found last year that ZTE had conspired to evade U.S. embargoes by buying U.S. components, incorporating them into ZTE equipment and illegally shipping them to Iran. ZTE, which devised elaborate schemes to hide the illegal activity, agreed to plead guilty after the Commerce Department took actions that threatened to cut off its global supply chain. As I know ZTE is  smart phone producer but it's obviously ZTE is under the state control. That’s how economics works over there. Mega companies have massive ties to the state and the state has access....

Very,very interesting. Why? The order of US Department of Commerce comes just hours after the UK’s cyber security watchdog warned the UK telecoms sector not to use network equipment or services from ZTE as it would have a “long term negative effect on the security of the UK”.

Ok. But how would this work in practice? Every US telecom has equipment from Huawei and ZTE. Are you going to strip Verizon and AT&T of their transmission licenses?

Unlike LineageOS and Cyanogenmod which are true open source projects, Huawai and ZTE are using Google's Android OS which is known for tracking usage data and telemetry collection methods that can not be turned off. CM and LOS never included this and forbid it's usage without an ability for the user to enable/disable it. But I'm not a supporter of conspiracy theory...

This will be massively damaging to  ZTE. They can no longer use American components, which means lots of products will have to be re-designed and re-sourced.

Or a blessing in disguise. Recently a Chinese researcher or something said that China is too dependent on imported chips. Apparently, it's not just chips. They'll learn to make their own.

More new rules proposed on this late yesterday: U.S. telecoms regulators proposed a rule that would bar government programs from buying from any company that could theoretically pose a security threat ... 

In the meantime, still not a lot of clarification on Monday's developments, and ZTE still isn't sure if it's going to be able to continue to use Google's Android operating system in mobile devices.
