Does Toyota Threaten to Encroach on Tesla's Territory?

Toyota  reached a deal to explore a new  battery partnership with Panasonic. Is this deal a real threat to Tesla or just a good ad for Toyota?

It looks more that Toyota is just teasing Tesla continuing long-lasting rivalry between these two automakers.

We won't see this for a while because they haven't start yet with investigating the technological potential of batteries. Until then Tesla will continue with victories.

Panasonic is the one keeping the best position in this. It already has a major partnership with Tesla to jointly manufacture a competing battery technology.

Toyota has actually denied itself with these move. Haven't they say after separating with Tesla that the automotive revolution will be driven by hydrogen fuel cells, and not battery-electric cars?

Right, and than they triumphantly declared that EVs are easier to make than FCVs which is the reason they will continue with fuel cell vehicles. Hope they figured out now that they've rushed with these statements.

As I know, they are trying  with Toyota Mirai like their version of future. (Mirai in japanese means future)

I agree. Toyota already had a joint venture with Mazda focusing on EV batteries. In that time, Toyota was promising that plug in electric together with hydrogen fuel cell vehicles will make half of the their global sales by 2030. Not sure they will succeed in fulfilling that promise

I doubt unless they speed up a grow of their "green car" sector. But even then, it will be very hard to beat Tesla especially having in mind their another promise about bringing a long-rage- all-EV to market by 2020

and it's not just about growing their EV offerings: they've got to have the supply chain to back it up. They need batteries, and battery factories and everything that goes into a battery.

I'm not surprised that Toyota has won in this category. Tesla is everything but green. Is it at all on the "green" list?

Yes, on not worth mentioning place. Right on the bottom of the ranking list among automakers, even behind Mazda and Subaru.

Competition is heating up for Tesla.  The newest 7 seater electric SUV was unveiled in Beijing this weekend. And it is 50% cheaper than Tesla's Model X.

Maybe Toyota can't compete with Tesla right now, but it's on the right path. As a producer of one of the most famous hybrid cars in history, is now going to enable every car it makes available with an electric motor.

Actually, I think everyone overlooks GM in this game. They're way behind, but right now it's all about a massive EV push for this largest of carmakers in the US. It's rolling out 20 new all-electric models by 2023. That's huge and GM is really gunning for an all-electric future. Finally.

All we talk about lately are EVs. And they make only 1% of auto sales worldwide, even less in the US. Are drivers really into EVs? Don't think so. It's all about numbers, and sales numbers are still not taking over the industry.
