Just a gentle correction: Oil stored in shale rock is "shale oil" whereas "oil shale," the term that you used, refers to kerogen.

Kerogen is "teenage" oil, or an oil precursor that hasn't been heated enough or compressed at high enough pressure to nudge it toward real oil.

This is of more than academic interest. For decades it has been known that Utah held around 400 billion barrels of "oil shale," and that with the passage of time, after all the oil had been exploited, the Uinta Basin would become like Saudi Arabia. Well, it looks like that will never happen: most if not all of the oil shale in the world will become stranded forever.

I worked in Vernal, UT back 2002. (Uinta Basin)  For Encan that was just formed from two large Canadian firms.  Heard many rumors about the "oil shale".  Believe it was on Indian lands?  That it was some kind of US National Strategic Interest reserve?  Stories about heating it up to suck the stuff out?
