Electric Vehicles Could Finally Be Reducing Norway's Fuel Consumption

For many years, Norway has had the highest growth rates and highest penetration of EVs in the world. Last month the Norweigan government released its final 2017 figures for Sales of Petroleum Products. For the first time since at least 2014, Norway's consumption of gasoline and diesel declined across the board. Motor gasoline sales declined by 2.9%, dutiable diesel fell by 2.7%, and duty-free diesel declined by 2.6%. Overall petroleum product sales declined by 2.2%, although some categories of consumption, such as heavy fuel oil, jet kerosene, and other petroleum products all showed higher consumption.

if their electricity comes mostly from their hydroelectric dam, then EV is good for them. For commercial vehicles, it is still not that practical to have EV. this is where diesel engines are still useful and it still come from sustainable biodiesel. Jet fuel can come from renewable sources as well these days.

Sonja Monica Berlijn from the Norwegian energy operation company Stattnet states:

“The power grid will probably cope, because even though the number of electric cars increase, electricity consumption is increasing at a slower rate. Even when all cars run on electricity, it will only increase electricity consumption in Norway by about 6%, and if charging is done intelligently, the load at peak will only rise a few percent. It’s actually worst on Thursdays, so please don’t charge your EVs on Thursday nights.”

Yeah, I didn't like the "probably" part, either. They have to be certain it will cope even without having to ask people to not charge on Thursday nights. How many will listen, Norwegian--meaning nice--as they might be?
