WaPo OpEd:  The latest GOP nonsense on Texas shows us the future Republicans* want

*Some Republicans anyway, in the Delusional Trump wing of the GOP (see my comment below on the GOP still following a loser like Trump)

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/02/18/texas-republicans-abbott-power-shortages/

Excerpt:

Texas is showing us the future Republicans want.

This isn’t intended to mean that Republicans want a future beset by the sort of power shortages that have crippled Texas, which have left millions without power in frigid temperatures and are being exacerbated by other dire conditions, such as water shortages.

No doubt many Republicans expressing outrage at the failures producing this disaster — and calling for accountability and reform — are sincere in their intentions, though we’ll see how long those demands persist.

But it’s painfully obvious that in an important larger sense, many aspects of their reaction to the Texas calamity do indeed demonstrate the future they want.

It’s a future in which the default response to large public problems will be to increasingly retreat from real policy debates into an alternate information universe, while doubling down on scorched-earth distraction politics and counter-majoritarian tactics to insulate themselves from accountability.

Top Texas Republicans on the ropes after tone-deaf storm response

https://www.politico.com/news/2021/02/19/texas-storm-response-cruz-abbott-perry-470109

Excerpt:

The brutal winter storm that turned Texas roads to ice, burst pipes across the state and left millions of residents shivering and without power has also damaged the reputations of three of the state’s leading Republicans.

Sen. Ted Cruz was discovered to have slipped off to Mexico on Wednesday night, only to announce his return when he was caught in the act. Gov. Greg Abbott came under fire over his leadership and misleading claims about the causes of the power outages. And former Gov. Rick Perry suggested Texans preferred power failures to federal regulation, a callous note in a moment of widespread suffering.

It’s more than just a public relations crisis for the three politicians. The storm has also battered the swaggering, Texas brand of free-market governance that’s central to the state’s political identity on the national stage.

"Texans are angry and they have every right to be. Failed power, water and communications surely took some lives,” JoAnn Fleming, a Texas conservative activist and executive director of a group called Grassroots America, said in a text message exchange with POLITICO.

“The Texas electric grid is not secure,” said Fleming, pointing out that lawmakers “have been talking about shoring up/protecting the Texas electric grid for THREE legislative sessions (6 yrs),” but “every session special energy interests kill the bills with Republicans in charge ... Our politicians spend too much time listening to monied lobbyists & political consultants. Not enough time actually listening to real people.”

. . . . Abbott’s moves follow widespread criticism for an appearance with Fox News’ Sean Hannity in which he echoed a misleading claim attacking renewable energy as a root of the problem. Perry did the same thing in a blog post on the website of U.S. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, but then went an extra step.

“Texans would be without electricity for longer than three days to keep the federal government out of their business,” Perry wrote. “Try not to let whatever the crisis of the day is take your eye off of having a resilient grid that keeps America safe personally, economically, and strategically.”

Unmentioned by Perry: He was governor in 2011, when experts recommended winterizing the power grid.

. . . . Democrats sought to heighten the contrast between Cruz and his 2018 Senate opponent, former Rep. Beto O’Rourke, by pointing out that the senator went to Cancun and tweeted about the death of radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh while his former rival stayed in El Paso and tried to marshal his social media followers to help fellow Texans.

US power outage map on Monday night.

If we draw a line from Brownsville, Texas north to the Canadian border, all of the states along this line were heavily impacted by the weather.  Why was Texas the only state with catastrophic power losses?

More than a few years ago, my tennis coach advised me to always change a losing game, but stay with a winning game.

In a normal political environment, if a party's presidential candidate, running for reelection in this case, had delivered a triple play loss--White House, Senate and the House--to the other party, there would have been a reckoning, and a search for a new leader.

However, given Trump's successful "Big Lie" efforts to convince a majority of Republicans that the election was stolen by the rascally Democrats, Trump is effectively causing the GOP to double down on the delusional Big Lie approach that led to the Democrats controlling the White House, the Senate and the House.

I suppose that one sense, the Trump Crazies are effectively supporting the Democratic Party's efforts in 2022 and 2024, but I would think that even Democrats would agree that it can't be good for the future of the country for a majority of the GOP to believe in things that simply are not true--with January 6th being an obvious example of what can go wrong.

Democrats now making the weather political.  Why does everything need to be political.  Everything is Trump's fault.  You are only making Trump stronger.

You want to write something political ?  How about writing about the Grim Reaper . . . New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.  Sent thousands to death in Nursing Homes.

The Feds increased daily payment to Nursing Homes from $200/day to $800/day for covid patients.  So Cuomo signed a bill that hospitals send covid elderly to Nursing Homes to benefit his biggest contributors and then gave them immunity for legal suits.

Then according to ambulance drivers,  in the final patients days the Nursing Homes sent the scared covid infected elders back to the hospital put a ventilator in them and the hospital received $39,000 per respiratory patient.  The elders died alone without their loved ones .

That's criminal.  Cuomo should be charged with Manslaughter.  Man 1.

If Cruz is the best the GOP has to offer, the GOP is doomed. The grid meltdown, or should I say the freeze up of mainly gas pipelines feeding Nat Gas power plants and then Ted fleeing to Mexico shows that the GOP in Texas will have a rocky road in 2022 and  2024. If Beto runs against Cruz in 2024, I expect Cruz to lose as Cancungate will not be forgotten. Texas has a hard choice right now to get rid of their island mentality and join the regional US grid or to really regulated all energy (IE real planning for electrical production and real oversight. As far as Ted, he really is a loser that should not be in charge of anything.

I agree that you have done a good job of perpetuating the "Big Lie" about a non-existent stolen election and thus avoiding a reckoning regarding Trump delivering the White House, the Senate and the House to the Democrats.

As previously noted, one wonders if your efforts are actually in support of Democratic efforts in 2022 and 2024?

WSJ Editorial Board:  Trump Lost to Himself

His own pollster shows why he became a one-term President.

https://www.wsj.com/articles/trump-lost-to-himself-11613691782?mod=hp_opin_pos_2

Excerpt:

Donald Trump  launched a personal attack on Mitch McConnell this week after the Senate GOP leader called the former President “practically and morally responsible” for the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. Mr. McConnell doesn’t need our defense, but we hope GOP voters aren’t buying Mr. Trump’s attempt to rewrite the history of the 2020 election.

Mr. Trump’s statement didn’t claim that he won the election, but it did begin to burnish the result by taking credit for every GOP victory while boasting that he “received the most votes of any sitting President in history, almost 75,000,000.” Joe Biden <https://www.wsj.com/topics/person/joe-biden> still beat him by more than seven million votes.

As important is why he lost, and for that look no further than Mr. Trump’s own pollster, Tony Fabrizio. His firm’s post-election analysis was first reported by Politico, but it’s worth resurfacing for Republicans to ponder.

Mr. Fabrizio looked at data from exit polls and AP’s VoteCast in 10 highly competitive states that Mr. Trump won in 2016. Mr. Trump lost five of them in 2020—Arizona, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin—while winning Iowa, Florida, North Carolina, Ohio and Texas a second time.

One stunning conclusion: Mr. Trump lost even though the electorate was more Republican in 2020 than in 2016. Mr. Fabrizio reports that Mr. Trump lost “largely due to a massive swing” among independents and erosion among Republicans. This helps explain how the GOP gained a dozen seats in the House even as Mr. Trump became the first President to lose re-election since George H.W. Bush.

Much of this erosion in support was based on dislike for Mr. Trump personally and the way he handled the Presidency. “While a majority of voters said they didn’t find either Presidential candidate honest or trustworthy, Biden held a double-digit advantage over POTUS,” especially in the five states that flipped to Mr. Biden in 2020, says the Fabrizio analysis.

Mr. Trump was favored 6 to 1 or more among voters on the economy. But the coronavirus was the top voter issue in both groups of states, and Mr. Biden carried those voters 3 to 1. Mr. Trump’s eroded credibility and inability to maintain a consistent Covid message may have been decisive.

More startling is that Mr. Trump “suffered his greatest erosion with white voters, particularly white men in both state groups,” according to the Fabrizio analysis. This offset his double digit gains with Hispanics while he performed about as well with blacks as he did in 2016. The former President also lost ground with nearly every age group in both sets of states, and he “suffered with white college educated voters across the board.”

We rehearse all this not to rub an open political wound. The point is to remember, as time passes and Mr. Trump blames everyone else for his defeat, that 2020 was a winnable race. Mr. Trump had many accomplishments to tout, and voters recognized them. But Mr. Biden’s consistent campaign message of a return to a calmer, more unifying politics resonated with millions of voters who had tired of the constant Trump turmoil.

Mr. Trump didn’t lose to Joe Biden. He lost to himself.

@Selva...does it ever end? Do you need someone to hold your hand? Leave the discussion to the Adults in the room and move along Junior if you can not handle the truth of what is happening in Texas today. PS yep a US senator should be working for those he represents, specially working to get FEMA into high gear and working on Federal disaster aid. Texas has been hit with at least 20 billion in damages(that was just the insured damage estimate) .

And the hypocrisy of a man who has trashed fellow politicians for vacationing during crises — vacationing in Cancun during a crisis himself.

At least Cruz apologized for taking his girls on a vacation.  Cuomo is refusing to apologize to the thousands of families who Cuomo killed their loved ones.  ( Cuomo did apologize to NY Democrats)

Cuomo did it to fill donors pockets with cash.  Here is how:

The  NYSHFA represent the 364 New York Nursing Homes. About 2/3 are private for profit.

1. Medicare paid maximum $200/day for a Nursing Home resident care.

2. For Nursing Home Covid patients the Feds would pay $800/day  !

3. Cuomo helped his crony benefactors by signing a bill to mandate elderly Covid patients be moved to nursing homes.

4. There were reports of some Nursing Homes squeezing 3 or 4 single beds into what previously a singles room that should contain one patient (4 x $800 =$3200/day per room)

5. Then Cuomo signed a bill indemnifying the Nursing Homes from liability.

                 $800/day   vs.   $200/day

Do you need to know anything else  ?

6. Governor Cuomo and Mayor DeBlasio refused to use the Medical ship Trump retrofitted and delivered to NYC or the emergency hospital bed facilities Trump built at the Javits Center and other venues. Both equipped with ventilators.

Campaign contributors don't make money there.

According to the ambulance drivers accounts during the Nursing Home patients last days as the covid virus consumed them, the patients were loaded into an ambulance, not told where they were going and delivered to a hospital acute care facility where they died alone without family by their side.

Many times the family wasn't informed till after the fact.

Also, the average Medicare patient payment to a hospital for a patient with complex respiratory condition was $13,297.  That has been increased for covid complex respiratory conditions to $39,000.

You know what's next.  Respiratory conditions that were the result of something like pneumonia were now classified as Covid.  One family in California lost their mother to cancer .  When the family received the death certificate it stated "Covid" .

Cuomo assistant told fellow Democrats they lied about nursing home deaths by half because they were worried about the U.S. Department of Justice hearing about the excessive Nursing Home death rates.

Cuomo should be charged with Manslaughter.  Do you agree at the very least Cuomo should return his Emmy ?

Maybe Abbot and Cuomo both need to have accountability. It's not A or B, you are allowed to have more than one opinion, hyperpartisanship isn't very pragmatic in the real world. The weather, like everything else is political because it is fundamental allocation of resources problem (but as is the case with everything, it depends on what tradeoffs you choose). Now, perhaps you can have your cake and eat it too by not having a physically separated grid (this just leads to this type of possibility when there are shocks), when financially, it is definitely not (because we all share the same atmosphere and currency system). It's sort of why the Articles of Confederation didn't work out, and the Constitution did relative to the ability to conduct commerce.

I was being polite.  😉

The newspaper the Bancroft family built is long gone, replaced by the Washington ComPost wanna be that the idiot kids of Murdoch are busy driving into the toilet along with Fox News and the rest. Their lurch to the left has only alienated their customers who are leaving them in droves, never to return. Mr Brown (nose) can quote them with glee but no one is respecting their editorial pages anymore. Amusingly, the Left still hates the Murdoch scions, so they've gained nothing by their duplicity.

Yea, hold Abbot accountable too. (Don't forget Abbot accepted an award the week before for being a leader in Wind Energy).

Cruz deserves the crap he is receiving for going on vacation . . .  but my post is comparing Cruz coverage to Cuomo's coverage which is almost nonexistent.

Is Cruz action any worse than Pelosi preaching no hair salons and always wear masks and doing the opposite  or Gov. Newsom having dinner at the French Laundry or Governor Whitmer banning Memorial Day outings then having their boat prepped and docked for the weekend ?

All the left media blasting Cruz (deserved) . . . .  but where were they when Pelosi , Newsom and Whitmer were violating their own rules ?

Cruz was wrong. He apologized to his constituents.  At least he didn't kill thousands of constituents like Cuomo.

Cuomo created the death Nursing Homes to please his donors.

Cuomo created the cover-up.

And Cuomo apologized to NY Dems for getting caught, not the families whose loved ones he killed.

The only ones that think Gov did a good job are himself, brother Fredo and Dr.  Fauci.

Now if you were actually a US citizen???? Ha ha ha you are convinced everyone on these boards that does not suck up to Trump or Cruz must be a foreigner. Pathetic that you even post here. Ted Cruz can do nothing??? then why is he a US senator?? guess he has no power , he should resign. Anyone that tries to find an excuse for Lying Ted needs to be sent back to school to get their GED. Only trailer dwellers still hang on to Cruz and Trump.

Odd commentary, yet not at all surprising. My commentary merely reflects your lack of understanding of just how the US structure actually functions. Most US citizens would be well aware of the fact state Govnerors call in FEMA which this governor actually has.

Cruz at this point would merely get in the way, muck things up with grandiose interviews, town halls perhaps..any politician would merely be a nusance.

Let the storm end, then cry havoc.

Laughs it would seem ive not adapted to cell phone texting. That is a good thing I do believe, all those years of buying high speed flat screens and end squinting at some micro screen? Ohh and this auto correct program? Back to the laptop for me, and perhaps a class in US civics for you.

That's criminal.  Cuomo should be charged with Manslaughter.

1,000 plus counts.

Cuomo intervened in medical care and acted as if he was some sort of expert at it and at leadership in the field. He has caused thousands of deaths and greatly damaged the economy as well.  Abbot may be gulty of not overseeing the reliability of the grid but that was ERCOT's responsibility. A governor cannot be expected to know every industry better than the experts already in it. Once true errors are discovered it is his job to find the correct solutions.

I would like to know who in Texas was advocating for additional measures to protect against cold weather shutdowns. Surely someone had the suspicion that this was a catastrophe waiting to happen. If so, who? They should be heard.

"DeRosa said, according to a transcript of a Feb. 10 meeting with state legislators. "The governor speaks on a regular basis with Dr. [Anthony] Fauci and Dr. Michael Osterholm. I would say those are two of the people that are chief advisors."

Video.  Cuomo and Fauci laugh it up.  A mutual admiration relationship. Covid virus, such a funny topic to these two.

Fauci wants an Emmy too !

Maybe Fauci should be charged with Manslaughter also.
