With the prospect of losing his position of Senate Minority leader Mitch would rather leave before that position is taken from him.  He wants to protect his legacy.

However, presently the Governor of Kentucky (D) would name the successor of McConnell whose term has 6 years.

Mitch is working with the Kentucky state legislature to change that.

The rumor amongst DC insiders is they will let McConnell retire as standing Minority leader with his legacy intact , as soon as he can get the Kentucky legislature to approve the succession plan.

McConnell leaving Congress and being replaced by a Democrat would give the Democrat Party a majority in the Senate. 51 (D) - 49 (R)

A disaster .
