Natural gas is odorless. What you are smelling is mercaptan that is added so consumers can detect a leak.

Its mercaptan. Its specifically added so you know if there is a leak. Methane is odourless.

Because they put Methanethiol to give it that smell, otherwise you wouldn't notice when the inside of the house fills with natural gas, when you ignite a match is what a chemist would call "no bueno"
