Musk Says India Conditions Preventing Tesla's Entrance

Recommended Posts

Tesla has not started making electric vehicles in India yet because of some challenging government regulations, Musk said on Wednesday.

Do we know what these regs are? China relaxed its prohibitive regulations for Tesla. Will India follow suit? They have aggressive EV plans on paper. Will they do what needs to be done to achieve these goals?

From the link:

"Tesla and China were said to disagree over the future ownership of a Tesla factory in Shanghai. China has insisted that all vehicle-manufacturing plants should be joint ventures with local partners, and currently all foreign carmakers must have a Chinese partner to manufacture vehicles locally. But Tesla wanted to have full ownership of the future factory."

Yep, many countries have local content rules.  China in particular requires local content + joint venture for foreign companies who want to enter China and try to sell their products in the China market.

Fair enough, I see no issue with that, it certainly happens often enough in the Oil & Gas world.

Elon Musk might be in for a rude awakening if he thinks he can have everything his way when doing busuness overseas.  This could get amusing, watching Mr. Musk trying to do maverick Western style business in China and India.
