US sanctions on Iran

The recent sanctions on Iran by USA seems to be a closely considered act by Trump administration. This looks like an act to make sure that the oil prices remain high. Sometimes i feel that the Middle East allies of US (read Saudi Arabia) always want Iran to be on a downside. They clearly know that Iran has the ability to change the tide and the international oil and gas price and thats why these sanctions. Iran would keep on researching nuclear science irrerespective of sanctions. What benefit would US and allies achieve anyway ?(well higher oil prices to make them richer!!)
