There is nothing illegal about tracking cell phones.  Becker obviously has never darkened a court room door when a motion to suppress is being argued.  That was settled back in 1991 in the divorce of then Congressman Bill Sarpalius from Amarillo. That was one of the old analogue types they could record the conversation  just like a radio broadcast.  Ron do you use OUTHOUSE lawyers for your own legal work. If so I really want to sue you.

I assume a lot of "critical infrastructure" will probably need to comply with some sort of standard similar to NIST 800. 

The latest version includes a lot of changes specifically for securing internet connected industrial controls.

• Eliminating the term information system and replacing it with the term system so the controls can be applied to any type of system including, for example, general-purpose systems, cyber-physical systems, industrial/process control systems, and IoT devices;
• De-emphasizing the federal focus of the publication to encourage greater use by nonfederal organizations;

Reducing the visible attack surface area is very important, but so are the backoffices, where foreign criminals often infiltrate.

Not quite. Can't listen in on a digital conversation but they track the pinger your cell sends out to cell towers.  They use something called a stingray which tracks the 2G emergency network  911 calling system or now 4G.

"Every time your phone connects to the 4G network, it runs through a checklist — known as a handshake — to make sure that the phone is allowed to connect to the network. It does this by exchanging a series of unencrypted messages with the cell tower, including unique details about the user’s phone — such as its IMSI number and its approximate location. These messages, known as the master information block (MIB) and the system information block (SIB), are broadcast by the cell tower to help the phone connect to the network."

If you use many apps they can detect so much more.

They can tell from vibrations in your G sensor if you are walking, running or travelling in a car. If you have wifi hotspots on they know what stores you are at. If you are sitting for a long time looking at garbage they know you are taking a crap.  Obliviously if you look at pr0n they know what you are doing...

Some people even do payment with their phone... I can't handle that idea and pay with a tap credit card which is clearly less traceable...

 

Privacy is a myth -- the good thing is nobody cares what you are doing unless you are doing seriously bad shit.

I think it started well before the unconstitutional Patriot Act. Bush and Cheney did make things worse but Obama only continued the trend and brought in more leftists to cement it in place. It is now being turned against conservative patriots rather than Muslim terrorists. The whole system needs to be dismantled. JFK tried to do that after the Bay of Pigs fiasco and he did not live long enough to dismantle it. 

We have allowed nearly every important secrets the government has held to be stolen or given away to our enemies. The billions of dollars spent annually by our "intelligence agencies" has been misspent, to a large degree, on spying on our general population. That began with infiltrating journalists and media. It now includes the full force of silicon valley elites and other crony corporate fascists.

I agree that the "Patriot Act" legislation should be removed.
