China's crackdown on it's tech sector is interesting, but it's probably also kind of too late, partially because the best and brightest in China have gone into that sector for at least a generation (because capitalism).

The biggest source of leaks (quite interestingly) from within China has become open source websites like Github (and their Chinese language equivalents), because they can be trivially linked in a decentralized manner with strong cryptographically secure multi-party computation.

This is almost impossible for the "Great Cannon" to fight in effective manner because it is death by a million cuts. 

At best the regime can nuzzle high profile targets, but due to the sheer size of the tech sector in China, it probably is not very effective.

About Indians as best commenters on China: India is a vast country, and you can find both geniuses and idiots.  Current Indian government is not an epitome of tolerating opposition and minorities, although it does a good job in protecting cows.

About "tech sector" crackdown.  What is call "tech" is rather unfortunately spawning monopolies that strangle competition and squeeze profits from suppliers and customers.  Intermediaries like Amazon (or Walmart) would be more benign if they competed with similarly sized companies.  Very recently, Americans faced the censorship power of "social media" lords, that sector should also be less concentrated (Chinese authorities are themselves interested in censorship opportunities, but Americans could use some "crackdown").  In other words, cracking down on abuses of monopoly power can be the right thing.

So you build a company and would like others to decide what you put on it even if you disagree with what they believe. In the past people go to war over freedom to express themselves.

Currently the Democrats are trying to enforce more silencing of conservative opinions or any that do not go along with the Democrat Party Line which is somewhat like the old Communist Party Line with a new name. The next congressional election is our only hope for fair change and freedom of speech on most social media. Right now we have  a lot of very small sites that are truly conservative. Breitbart.com is one of the best and most comprehensive.
