Nuclear power in Russia

Russian nuclear power plants set a record for electricity generation in 2021

In 2021, nuclear power plants of Rosenergoatom Concern (part of the electric power division of Rosatom State Corporation) generated over 222.436 billion kWh. The indicator broke the 1988 record set by all nuclear power plants in the Soviet Union (215.669 billion kWh).

“Russian NPPs entered 2022 with a new record exceeding 222.436 billion kWh ... The FAS balance in 2021 was fulfilled by almost 102.2% against the planned target of 217.674 billion kWh (or by 103.1% relative to the previous, 2020 year) ", - reported on the website of " Rosenergoatom ".

The largest contribution to generation was made by Kalininskaya (over 34.3 billion kWh), Balakovskaya (over 33 billion kWh) and Rostov (over 31.7 billion kWh) nuclear power plants.

Also, a large role in the increase in electricity generation was played by the commissioning in March 2021 of the power unit No. 6 of the Leningrad NPP with a capacity of 1200 MW, as well as the optimization of the duration of repair campaigns by 107 days.

Nice, but what does that have to do with the subject of this forum: Unicorn Farts?

Nuclear is the main low emissions competitor to renewables so it has a place in this forum - sort-of, although a disclaimer or brief explanation in the post would have been nice. To have any hope of getting even a part of the way towards zero emissions than nuclear is the only option but the vocal green lobby just does not want to accept that. Good to see that the Russians, at least, are stepping up, although I hope they've improved their reactor designs since Chernobyl.

I hope they have improved on operations of RBMK's.  Particularly when "painting themselves into a corner" and the thing goes off like a flashbulb... "It was similar to airline pilots experimenting with the engines while in flight."

Hopefully they at least did something about the damn graphite on the insertion ends of the control rods.  Shesh!

I wonder if draining turbine-generator coastdown inertia is now enough to provide cooling until the DG's start and take over.

Did you ask yourself a question why Rosatom is the concern with the largest portfolio of orders for the construction of nuclear power plants in the world nowadays?

No RBMK's and no rods anymore
