When Will We See a Solar-Powered Steel Smelter?

The renewable energy industry is as heavily reliant on fossil-fuelled vehicles and installations as Saudi Arabia is on oil. Is anyone working to change this? When will solar-powered steel furnaces replace the coal-fuelled ones and when will start Caterpillar making solar/hydrogen/battery-powered mining trucks? Now, these are guzzlers!

I guess it's the difference between the way things transform when they're controlled by a state and when they are publicly listed and controlled by the market. In North America, this will change only when it makes economic sense.

Ah, but before that all subsidies must go, so things are really controlled by the market with no participation by the state. Subsidies are a direct state interference, not that this is invariably a bad thing, of course.
