They are a smaller target and would be far more targets and much harder to hit. Long range hand held or small missile launchers could take out long range artillery and close in ships. Drones can replace manned aircraft at a much smaller price and can be programmed to dogfight. The drones can be small to large with higher capacity for munitions. Automated, remote controlled supply carriers can accompany troops. Multiple small submarines and boats like PT boats and small drone or helicopter carriers may be far better than aircraft carriers and far less expensive and harder to hit. Our military needs to start over and figure out how to best spend our money, not just continue to let the military make decisions by itself, regardless of costs and cost overruns.
