As the West has already reached the top rung of the sanctions-ladder with plenty of reluctant participants, the escalation shows no sign of slowing down. On the contrary, the nuclear spectre is no longer in the embryonic state in the psyche of those who hold them, leaving our own existence under threat as never before.

We have a long way to go before we hit sanctions like those imposed on Cuba, Nicaragua, Iran in 1980, Southern Rhodesia or South Africa( I am still amused at the reason Reagan gave for not putting sanctions on DeBeers and their diamonds).  You would have to break diplomatic relations, prohibit all  travel to Russia for any reason, expel all Russians  working abroad paying taxes as a Russian citizen or remittances of wages to Russia.  No Russian caviar or vodka, cut Russia off from the CME and stop sales to China and India for resale to Russia.   As for interest rates, well in 1982 home mortgages hit 14%. 

We ain't there yet so cut the doom and gloom.
