yeah, I know how this sounds but it just goes to show you can do anything you like with numbers. From a certain perspective--the perspective of emissions per tonne of newly mined gold, apparently-- gold is less polluting than aluminium, steel and coal.

This article is only considering air pollution... but what about soil and water pollution caused by cyanide spills or mercury ?
