In Europe this is more about garages as convenience stores. Garages make most of their profit from other products rather than fuel.

Now, that is an interesting set up. The key here is that both industries are so entrenched with their legacy business models and neither is willing to innovate and deploy models required for the transition to lower carbon energy.

Some oil companies (mainly in Europe) are starting to evolve from pure oil and gas companies to "energy companies" offering not only fossil fuel but also increasingly renewable energy. Norway's Equinor (former Statoil) stated ambition is "to be the world’s most carbon-efficient oil and gas producer, as well as driving innovation in offshore wind and renewables".

With this trend going on we could see some oil companies taking over utilities to extend control in electricity generation.

If oil companies see a way to making money by electrical energy production they will do it at the end they got gas and oil suppliers, -themselves-.

YPF wants to become the largest electricity provider in Argentina. They got the massive shale oil and gas resources to do it, so... bring it on.

But will the utilities want to be taken over or will they want to take over others? This is the fascinating question.
