Big Oil and Utilities Square Up For Electric Car War as Both Offer Charging

Recommended Posts

As electric cars begin eating into profit growth at oil companies, the war for electric-car drivers' pocketbooks has begun. Oil majors, who've sold fossil fuels to cars for a century, are now moving into an electricity sector that's preparing for exponential growth. The problem is that utilities have the same idea. Who will win this war?

I think utilities have a huge advantage. Oil companies can't make money as costs too much to install, run and buy power for. Only utilities or even Tesla are willing to sell power at costs are viable as a service. If they raise the price to cover cost, it's not affordable.

Even if the oil companies install some public chargers, the power companies are almost certainly still the ones supplying the power. So the power companies win either way.
