I read some time ago of the large (huge) amount of Federal employees that owed large (huge) amounts of back taxes. I"m assuming these will also be held to the same passport denial.

So the IRS will deny citizens passports but they won't tell ICE who is using your Social Security number fraudulently.

If one owes over 50K than he/she made a pretty decent amount of money and simply didn't think to pay the taxes. Plus the IRS doesn't go to those extremes unless you have completely ignored or simply do not respond. They have payment plans, settlements...

Yes. But still, no need to paint anyone as victims here (not that you were). If you amassed 50k in penalties for not paying your taxes, well, that's on you, and you probably shouldn't be spending money on overseas travel?

Not really.  I suspect these cases are where the IRS simply levies an "assessment" on the taxpayer, saying :"We say you owe this, so now you go prove otherwise!"  The IRS tax assessment then becomes cement, and it runs with interest payments that are astounding, as they compound.  The "assessment" is typically a number that is sucked out of the end of the thumb of some IRS employee, not having any relationship to reality.  You see these kinds of IRS assessments on people who either have no real income, or have some income in cash receipts which is not amenable to tracking from third-party remitters  (i.e. employers).  The IRS has this long history and reputation for abuse, which is one big reason the Nigerian and Russian scam artists phone people up, say "I am Inspector Clouseau from the IRS, Badge Number 45678, and you owe $16,000, you pay today or we come with a warrant with your arrest!  And take you to jail!"   And guess what, people actually are so unnerved and intimidated that they run to the nearest Western Union and wire out $3,000 or $4,000 to start a tax leniency program, and whoosh the money is in the hands of the scam artists. 

When the IRS does an assessment, basically your only option is then to go file a lawsuit in the COurt of Tax Claims or whatever they call it, and go duke it out with some bored Assistant U.S. Attorney on your dime and that can go on for years.  Meanwhile these bums lock you away. Me, I would be heading for the Canadian Border.  Or buy a sailboat and start heading for the country of your choice.  Use sacks of gold coins for your boat ballast, hey why not?

that's a page from Putin's playbook! Being a thing in Russia for a while - people with any debt (not only tax) over ~$160 are prevented from leaving the country. No passport is taken - checked against database. Find yourself: http://fssprus.ru/iss/ip

This could effect a huge number of Americans.  Why? 

UNDERWITHOLDING!   

While the tax break is great for the wealthy, most middle class will be paying more. 

And the withholding algorithms at PayChex and the payroll processing firms haven't changed.  

So a lot of people will unexpectedly have back taxes to pay.
