Top Adviser to Khamenei: Iran Will Leave Syria, Iraq Only if Baghdad, Damascus Want It

Recommended Posts

A top aide to Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Friday that Iran would immediately withdraw its “military advisers” from Syria and Iraq only if their governments wanted it to. Iran and Russia’s presence in Syria will continue to protect the country against terrorist groups and America’s aggression ... We will immediately leave if Iraqi and Syrian governments want it, not because of Israel and America’s pressure,” - said Ali Akbar Velayati in a conference in Moscow. Iran and Russia back Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the country’s civil war.

Such demographic changes happened a lot in Iraq post-2003. Many Sunnis in Basra, for example, were threatened to either leave or die at the hands of Shia militias. Iran is the main locomotive behind sectarian cleansing campaigns in Iraq and Syria.

Iran has touted $50bn worth of potential Russian investments in its oil and gas sector as it seeks to deepen its relationship with Moscow, amid mounting pressure from the US to curb the country’s energy exports and diplomatically isolate Tehran. Russia has sought to use its vast oil and gas industry to build stronger links with Iran, as part of a strategy to increase its role in the Middle East. This includes supporting the government of Bashar al-Assad in the Syrian war, as relations with the west sour and US sanctions force it to look for new trade and investment partners.

Did I miss something? Sanctions, terrorism, poisoning....
