EV Sales Growth Is Slowing In Europe

Sales growth of electric and plug-in hybrid cars has slowed across EU major markets during the first half of this year because customers are still wary of limited driving ranges of the models and an insufficient charging network. Registrations of electric cars rose 33 % in the six months through June, compared to a 54 % surge a year earlier, according to consultancy EY. Strong demand in Germany, the EU’s biggest auto market, wasn’t enough to offset meeker growth in the U.K., the second largest.

The cost of electricity is much lower per mile than petrol (remember Europe also has high petroleum taxes)

The primary issue is range of affordable vehicles. A secondary issue is that many city dwellers where EV's are at their best don't have driveways for cheap overnight charging so they are limited to rapid charge facilities which are a PITA even with 20 minute charge times.

EV simple are very, very  expensive for citizens of middle-income european countries. Maybe in Norway where you earn 5.000 euros per month its good alternative option.

But surely not for people from Poland or Slovakia where medium wage is rather 600 euros after taxes.

In these lower-income States such as Poland and Ukraine, I suspect you will see EV or EV-hybrid purchases down the road, as used cars.  When the stuff rolling in Germany comes off warranty, or off-lease, then a secondary market would be found more to the East. 

That said, given the vast distances in Ukraine, and the larger distances in Poland as compared to say Belgium, you are still going to see lower adoption rates, even with the price of used cars down to say 20% of new, except for hybrids, for which there will always be a secondary market.  And PS: that is why I predict the Chevy Volt will have higher resale values than the Bolt, that gasoline engine in there (which can be fixed by any decent mechanic) will continue to run, even when the battery pack is kaput. 

PS: for those of you who are not aware of this, and the GM salesmen typically do not know this, the Volt is designed with a clutch that engages under high-load, low-battery conditions, so that the gasoline engine directly drives the front axle through the transmission bypassing the electric motors.  It is in only one gear, I think the third of four.  With the clutch disengaged, the gas motor drives a generator which charges the battery pack which pulls the juice for the electric motors, but you do bypass that under high-load, no-volts conditions.  GM engineers are a lot smarter than the public gives them credit for.

In Poland we most often buy 10 years old  a quite wear and tear cars from Germany. They cost lets say 1000-6.000 euros per one vehicle. A lot of people probably could buy a more expensive car but they dont see a reason to spend such a  lot of money for brand new car if they earn 400-1.000 euros per month after taxes and a lot of cheap used cars are available. They are surely not brand new and quite often they are not even safe but they are quite cheap thats the reason to buy them.

In Ukraine they most often cant afford to buy even such car. Because Ukraine is not middle-income country. After Maidan except of Moldavia its the poorest country in Europe with average wage 236 euros after taxes in April 2018..

So sorry I really dont see any chance for EV in Poland and Ukraine in near future.

Perhaps a market for low cost chinese or indian EVs
