Geothermal resources of oil and gas depths. Is it a mystery, a fake or a big real energy resource in many countries? The latter is obvious, but not for everyone.

At the depths where oil and gas are extracted, the movement of liquids or gases occurs through pores and cracks. Therefore, the transfer of liquids and thermal energy from heated rocks to wells is greatly facilitated. Geothermal energy https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geothermal_energy is literally asking for surface when oil and gas are exhausted ... or mining is almost complete. So what prevents to raise to the surface a huge amount of thermal energy? ... After all, old oil and gas wells are able to do this. Let's look at the details of the illuminated problem together!

The best geologists have proved that the places of oil and gas extraction are above the mantle plumes. This is just where the geothermal heat comes to the surface most.
Each year, geothermal congresses are held https://www.geothermal-energy.org, where the rapid development of geothermal energy is announced at old oil and gas fields or near hydrocarbon production sites. Statistics stubbornly indicate that the old oil and gas wells and the depths of oil and gas reservoirs will serve humanity for a very long time . They can give heat and light. Agree, losing such energy and priceless time is an unjustified stupidity. Look at the implementation diagram, which is here below. The figure shows a three-step cycle of utilization of thermal energy.  For simplicity, one production and one injection well is shown....Thus, now we see clearly -

More geothermal resources are low grade heat which is great if you are in a cold country and need space heating but useless in a hot one.

Yet, judging by what Professor Fyk writes above, it would appear that old oil wells can be re-worked into 5-MW electric generators.  You do have to admit that that is an impressive concept.  Picking up 5,000 MW out of an exhausted old oil field is a staggering bonanza; it is five nuclear power plants basically for free.  Now, that is rather neat!

Each relatively successful oil well in the past can generate electricity. Power air conditioning from such electrical energy is not less beneficial than solar batteries. The concept is proven in practice. The point is that the concept can and should be developed. One of the directions is to use special geological depths for storing the total alternative energy (sun, wind, biohumus, geothermal water) in summer or winter.

I would assume at the temperatures quoted in that diagram you would have to use ammonia or some other volatile liquid as they are too low to run steam generators directly. That or sterling engines which again are quite low efficiency at turning heat into electricity (10% from what I recall)

Only in certain hotspots or volcanic activity zones, see the Andes, the Rockies, Central america, most of mexico, japan, new zealand the philippines and so on, basically your geothermal power map is also the volcanic zone map, not everywhere and not anywhere, the crust is actually very thick to go to the mantle, even if you go likely the heat is going to get lost before you can use to boil steam.
