How Boring is the Boring Company?

Recommended Posts

One of the newest "children" of Elon Musk aims to drill a network of tunnels under the big cities to relieve traffic congestion. Sounds great but I remember thinking "What about the exhaust fumes?" Apparently, plans are for the tunnels to be used by EVs and hyperloops, so there will be no issue with the fumes. But how viable will these tunnels be given that most forecasts see EVs only accounting for a tiny portion of the overall passenger car fleet in the near term and even in the longer term. Would there be any point to these tunnels if only , say, 2% of cars would be able to use them?

Obviously Elon Musk is not the only one who thinks the underground ventures are good idea. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency recently launched a competition aimed at creating efficient, cost effective and safe way to travel underground, offering big prize for a lucky winner.

Well, he's certainly a trend-setter, that much is obvious. I still need convincing it's a viable idea for the near future. For the long term -- yes but what do we do until then? Choke on exhaust fumes...
