EPA sued over cross-border smog pollution

Eight Eastern Seaboard states are suing the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency over air pollution that blows in from upwind states. The lawsuit stems from the EPA’s denial of a petition some of those states filed in 2013 under the Clean Air Act to get the agency to add nine upwind states to a group that must work together to reduce smog pollution. The Obama administration’s EPA proposed denying the petition just before Inauguration Day, and current EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt finalized the denial in November. New York, Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont say that denial violates the Clean Air Act.

In my opinion, I believe that EPA director, who personally filed dozens of lawsuits against the EPA when he was AG for Oklahoma, thinks those Eastern seaboard states are a bunch of crybabies and that a little pollution builds character.

The lawsuit is the latest in more than 100 actions he has taken against the Trump administration in less than a year. Funny thing is that Trump will have to embrace clean air or side with Obama... this is a tough one.

He’s right on target, and he’s being realistic,” said Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), a close home-state ally of Pruitt’s. 

“There’s no way we can run this machine called America without fossil fuels.”

The main problem in developing alternate energy source is that the congress has developed an attitude that funding for these projects should be primarily from investors, and that is risky business. There is little incentive for private investment in a low fuel cost environment.

According to study, made by Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, air pollution is still killing thousands in the U.S. every year, even at the levels allowed by the EPA.

 

Study claims that about 12,000 lives could be saved each year, their analysis concludes, by cutting the level of fine particulate matter nationwide by just 1 microgram per cubic meter of air below current standards.
