These Two Countries Are Asking The Rest of The World to Stop Using Coal

UK and Canada have come together to launch an international partnership hoping to accelerate the process of ending reliance on coal power. Following the UK and Canada’s lead, more than twenty partners have already signed up to be a part of the Powering Past Coal Alliance.

Well, let's look at some figures. Canada is a net exporter of coal and the UK earlier this year achieved its first coal-free day. Its coal statistics end in September 2016. Well done.

 

I think the aim of the partnership, @LAOIL is to talk a lot about how bad coal is thus motivating other countries around the world to switch to renewables. Which they are already doing. Because there's indisputable evidence that coal is bad. So what else is new?

More than half of the European Union’s 619 coal-fired power stations are losing money. As a result, the industry’s slow plans for shutdowns will lead to more than $30 billion in losses by 2030 if the EU fulfils its pledge to tackle climate change.

However, in US new administration has made reviving the coal industry a signature goal of the President, and many coal miners are taking this promise to heart. The coal industry has rebounded — a bit. This has more to do with foreign demand and rising natural gas prices than any of Trump’s pro-coal policies
