Dyson Gears Up For Electric Car Testing

The maker of vacuums and hand dryers unveiled plans to invest another $151 million to build 10 miles of test tracks and offices for 2,000 workers at a former Royal Air Force base in England. The company is seeking permission to build tracks for testing a vehicle's maximum speed and maneuverability, as well as its performance on hills and off-road terrain.

Dyson has been working on a battery electric vehicle for several years. Last year it announced that it would invest $2.7 billion to bring electric vehicles to market . That car is scheduled to launch in 2021, and Dyson is in the process of recruiting an extra 300 automotive roles.

Getting into the electric car business seems like madness. I'm all for the electric cars but it's a hellish industry, huge costs and established players. Seems like a vanity project. I predict it will end up collecting dust.

If they are first to get the solid-state batteries to commercial manufacturing and willing to sell batteries to others then they could be one who is making most money on EV.
Dyson make high quality electricals and that makes them more suitable for component manufacturer. Plenty of car makers  will need these parts.

Dyson have seen themselves as a battery motor (not in the car sense) company for years and so for them they think they are a company that builds very powerful motors it’s a logical step. Will be interesting to see if he can pull it off though.

That was a move primarily driven by labour costs that were not caused by Dyson.

Since the 1980's the UK economy has been driven by a house price inflation Ponzi scheme - its this bull in the china shop that has inflated labour costs in the UK (and other western countries) by more than any other factor and driven manufacturers to look abroad to lower inputs.

In the UK we can thank scum like Blair, Brown, Cameron and May for perpetuating this productive industry offshore scheme.

Its the efficiency of the motors that is key because a very high efficiency motor has a relatively smaller battery requirement for a given range.

When you have a technological revolution (as the shift from ICEs to EVs) its easier for some new actors to enter a well established industry. EVs are easier to build than ICEs because they contain way less parts. So its not a surprise that some companies from outside the car industry are planing to enter the EV production (from Apple to Dyson and even ... Kalashnikov). Most will fail but some can succeed.
