Solving The Space Problem For America’s Solar Industry

There is ZERO interconnector Europe wide. Greece is not tied to the UK.  Spain/Africa are NOT tied to the UK. Start with Electrical production needs to increase by 4X minimum which means ~25% load X 4X = 100% current total load  of "interconnector" required or thereabouts assuming most power comes from other backup.

1st interconnector between spain/France is just now discussing being built and a mere ~5GW(technically they are connected but in effect trade zero power).  You are going to need ~200GW-->500GW minimum and more than likely MUCH higher.  I'll let you try and built 500GW power lines from Spain northwards, let alone the area to actually harvest said small amount of wind.  I am sure the locals will just "LOVE" such right of way...

To put it in simple terms for you and Eyes wide shut the widespread interconnectors in Europe have a pendulum effect across the whole continent.

A typical scenario

Its really windy over the UK and Ireland. Wholesale  prices fall (traded in 15 / 30 min blocks) and there is fair amount of predictability here anyway. Ireland backfills into the UK. French, Belgium, Dutch and Norwegian utilities take advantage and buy up power. Particularly in the case of France and Norway this allows them to idle / throttle back Hydro & charge up pump storage systems. This influx of electricity drops prices in their markets so it becomes attractive to buy by neighbouring countries - Germany, Italy who can throttle back gas and coal use (they are all generally net importers), idle Hydro. In Italy's case it has a direct interconnect with Greece so if the pricing is right Greece starts buying up power from Italy.

Norway can flog that power back to UK or other European countries when prices are right

You see similar patterns happen when solar / wind output in Spain and Germany are very high.

You can see it all working here - virtually in real time

Good read, Meridith,

You can pretty much count out The State of Florida, and New home insurance guidelines are you will not get a policy if you have Solar Panels on your roof.

It seems that the hurricane seasons have shown that roofs with Solar Panels tend to have more wind damage because the Solar Panels mount in a way that grabs more surface air which puts more strain on the top of the roofs.

What few Insurance Companies are left in Florida and the State-run Citizens is the insurer of the last resort, will not begin to cover homes with Solar Panels on the roofs.

The potential answer there is to integrate into the roof so air cant get under the panels. This will reduce performance marginally but not excessively so.

Amazing attitude in a state that's basically a sand spit 3 metres above current sea levels

Anther overlooked aspect by our naysayers is the increasing prevalence of demand response to intermittent supplies

The company I work for is building a new data centre. Our old data centre has to draw electricity off the grid continually and has at least 5 1MW emergency diesel gen sets to cover power cuts etc. These have to be cycled regularly along with servicing and the stinky fumes they produce etc.

The New data centres cooling system is based on having 10 million litres of 50/ 50 water propylene glycol in heavily insulated tanks that can be chilled down to about -28 deg C. The cooling system (there are 4/5 units)  can turn on and off in response to electricity prices. Today UK wholesale prices are bottoming out at around £60 / Mwh and peaking around £128. The system can simply buy the cheapest power and coast through the peak periods.

5200 m2 (1.2MW & 1.4 million kwh/y ) of solar are going on the roof along with a battery pack that allows for about 24 hours emergency operation (electrics and glycol circulation) . We will still have a couple of smaller emergency generators.

10 million litres of antifreeze at -28c is a massive cold thermal store so its allowed us to do away with most of the emergency generators as the system can operate for 5-7 days with no power except that needed to circulate.

We will even recycle the heat for office space & hot water

Added bonus is National Grid will pay us a fee for switching off on demand at certain peak demand times. This reduces the need to operate highly inefficient OCGT plant.

https://www.wsj.com/articles/europe-pays-for-green-energy-illusions-fuel-crisis-costs-11668451698

Europe is struggling to keep its lights and the heat on this winter, and fuel supply is only half of the energy crisis. The other half, now coming into view, is the ruinous fiscal cost associated with the failure of green-energy flights of fancy. European taxpayers will pay this bill for years to come.

Governments across Europe have announced €674 billion ($696 billion) in handouts and subsidies to alleviate the burden of skyrocketing energy prices between September 2021 and October 2022, according to Bruegel, the Brussels-based think tank. The money includes €264 billion in Germany alone and the equivalent of €97 billion in the United Kingdom. This is on top of what households and businesses are paying in higher energy bills even after the subsidies.

Germany’s Green Energy Meltdown

Voters promised a virtuous revolution get coal and high prices instead.

American climate-change activists point to Europe, and especially Germany, as the paragon of green energy virtue. But they ought to look closer at Angela Merkel’s political struggles as she tries to form a new government in Berlin amid the economic fallout from the Chancellor’s failing energy revolution.

Berlin last month conceded it will miss its 2020 carbon emissions-reduction goal, having cut emissions by just under 30% compared with 1990 instead of the 40% that Mrs. Merkel promised. The goal of 55% by 2030 is almost surely out of reach.

Hilarious Mr Magoo

You post a link claiming 'Europe is struggling to keep its lights and the heat on this winter' which was written in November 2022. As of May 2023 Europe kept the lights on and weathered the situation to a point where gas prices are back to 2021 levels. Better still you post a link to a 2017 article to back your position up🤡.

You may have heard, but probably not, that Russia invaded Ukraine in Feb 2022. Europe was purchasing approximately half its gas from Russia. It now purchases very little. That is the overwhelming reason why gas prices spiked in 2022 and dragged coal prices upwards too. 2017, as per your article link😅 was during the period that it was assumed that Europe would continue its cosy energy supply situation from Russia.

Contrary to the talking heads on Fox / WSJ investment in wind / solar / other green energy sources / and end use efficiency have helped reduce vulnerability to supply shocks as Europe is a significant net importer of energy.

EWO sorry but this is utter BS!

The ONLY reason Europe had sky high energy bills last winter was the ludicrously expensive NG because of the war in Ukraine, there was a lag from the massive cost hikes to the consumer of about 6 months.

Renewables didnt just happen overnight weve had them for decades and didnt have sky rocketing energy bills, actually the opposite!

See current chart and you'll see how NG prices are back to normal (although these reductions havent yet been fully passed to the average household)

https://www.statista.com/statistics/1267500/eu-monthly-wholesale-electricity-price-country/

Funny how all the people on here from Europe say the same thing and people from other continents disagree, unbelievable!

Your link is frankly incredibly lazy journalism by the WSJ and factually incorrect and misleading.

Why on earth would you need to build a 200GW / 500GW interconnector between Spain and France. Spains entire generating capacity is 79GW

I knew you were small brained, but this statement takes the cake.

This is the equivalent of saying NE USA with ~200 Million people doesn't need a giant interconnector to SW USA for solar or the Plains for wind.  In case you need a map, that is vastly greater distance than Greece to the UK by the way...

Jesus - do you have a passport? You every travelled outside of your state / county / farmstead?

Europes quite densely populated. Most power is consumed within its country of production. The interconnectors simply allow for a proportion to be transferred.

Spain and portugal are basically a cul de sac bar a small interconnector with Morocco as far as the electric grid goes. Why would they need an interconnector 3/4/5x their entire generating capacity?

Even if they went 100% renewable they have about 22GW of Hydro plus biomass

This has nothing to do with renewables. The article itself explains the price spike was due to the fact Finland had banned the import of Russian electricity so was competing for supplies - largely from Sweden.

The impact of the opening of this plant has knock on (pendulum) effects as described earlier. Finland no longer needs to import large amounts of electricity from Sweden which means its available for export into mainland Europe. Its also significantly reduced Finlands gas and coal burn.

The opening of this plant couldn't have come at a better time and shakes the Russian energy yoke off Finlands back.

LMAO You post this and state "for example below ends the entire green dream obsessions" and yet the very article itself says this "Energy prices had risen sharply in the Scandinavian country after the Finnish government banned electricity imports from neighboring Russia last year due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine."

Are you suggesting then that the power they were getting from Russia was renewables? and the switch to nuclear has reduced this, if so I cannot imagine a more stupid conclusion.

Just explain to anyone on this site how your link has anything whatsoever to do with renewable energy generation.

And then you get Footinmouth agreeing with you as he as has been shown before on this site that he cant read. If he could he would have read and understood it was NG from Russian imports. 🤡

You want to consider the construction in times for large wind farms and the fact these are modular so you can build them in parts and get them operational before the whole farm is completed (same story for solar).

To clarify though I am in favour of both nuclear and renewables. Anything but Russia gas for Europe. Infact I'd rather import US coal than buy Russian gas.

While I am in favour of nuclear do you realise it took them 18 years to build this plant. 18 years before the first Kwh produced.

I agree nuclear is very reliable baseload but one advantage that wind and solar have is it is very modular. In the UK the grid connections are built first. Then as the turbines / panels are installed they are connected to the grid. An offshore windfarm maybe generating and contributing to the grid 12-18 months before its official opening (Prince xyz pressing a symbolic button)

Edit - regarding Filand its a country of 5.5 million people and just commissioned one the worlds biggest single reactor nukes - the impact was always going to be profound given the size of the country relative to that investment.

You are like a parrot spouting the same carp that has proven to be complete tosh.

There were no major struggles over the winter. Europe kept its lights on through a variety of measures. In the UK several energy companies ran incentives schemes to reduce usage at certain peak times which was entirely voluntary .

Now lets take the logic spanner to the claim about Europeans saddling themselves with debt on the back of renewables

it would appear that the only major European economy with more debt as a % of GDP than the USA is Italy. Everyone else has a lower debt profile.

Well fancy that.
