Duterte Wants to Stop All Mining in Philippines

The Philippine president is apparently fed up with landslides that kill people and are being blamed on mining. Environmental damage, he says, outweighs economic benefits. Surprisingly, mining revenues only represent 1% of the country's GDP.

He should start a program to help clean up the shanty town slums, corrugated tin and scarp metal and cardboard death traps they have all over the hillsides around Manila and elsewhere, stabilize the hill sides and have a standard safe construction code ....... too much to ask.. in a poverty stricken land, people will do whatever to have a shelter however long it lasts and what the end costs maybe. ....
