Can Anyone Stop Them: Russia Accused Of Targeting Chemical Weapons Watchdog

Recommended Posts

The Dutch defense minister on Thursday accused Russia’s military intelligence unit of attempted cybercrimes targeting the international chemical weapons watchdog and the investigation into the 2014 Malaysian Airlines crash over Ukraine. The Dutch allegations came as British officials blamed Russia’s GRU for allegedly “brazen” activities worldwide the globe and for trying to cover up its alleged participation in the nerve agent poisoning of an ex-spy and the downing of a Malaysia Airlines plane over Ukraine. MH17. Russia has consistently denied involvement in the events. Dutch Defense Minister Ank Bijleveld said that the GRU’s alleged hacking attempts on the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons took place in April and were disrupted by authorities. Four Russian intelligence officers were immediately expelled from the Netherlands, she said. Speaking about Russia’s hacking attempts into the MH17 crash investigation, she said: “We have been aware of the interest of Russian intelligence services in this investigation and have taken appropriate measures.” “We remain very alert about this,” she said. Britain’s ambassador to the Netherlands, Peter Wilson, said the GRU would no longer be allowed to act with impunity. Britain blames the secretive military intelligence unit for the nerve agent attack in March on former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter, Yulia, in the English city of Salisbury. He said Russia’s actions against the Netherlands-based OPCW came as the agency was conducting an independent analysis of the nerve agent used against the Skripals.

Russia is a pariah state and terror sponsoring state. Question is why the west is not treating it as such?

Expected - everything is much worse than we know. The cards are opened...

"The UK has stepped up pressure on Russia following the nerve agent attack in Salisbury by blaming the GRU, Moscow’s military intelligence agency, for a series of “indiscriminate” and “reckless” cyber attacks over the past three years. In a statement released by Jeremy Hunt, foreign secretary, the UK listed six separate cyber attacks between July 2015 and October 2017 that it said were “almost certainly” carried out by the GRU or state-backed Russian hacking groups. While all of the attacks have previously been reported and in most cases linked to Russia, it is the first time four of the six attacks have been directly attributed to the GRU by the National Cyber Security Centre, part of Britain’s communications intelligence service GCHQ. Among the four incidents being attributed to the GRU by British intelligence for the first time are well-known cyber attacks, including the hack of the Democratic National Committee, at the centre of the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election being carried out by US special counsel Robert Mueller. In July, US authorities indicted 12 GRU agents for hacking DNC emails"

Russia's strategy is to destabilize the Western alliance by whatever means. If Russia is no longer a friendly nation, reducing  reliance on Russian oil and gas and harbouring dubious oligarchs would be a better strategy.

Good point. Im shocked than even after Iraq, Libya, Kosovo people in the West treat all official statements of spy agencies or goverments like facts. That are only statements not hard facts. And I would also like to see any hard facts for this never ending story of Russia did it.

During one of the Dutch hacks the police caught them using the equipment in the boot of a hire car outside OPCW offices, they also have photographic and cctv proof of it. Many other examples but this was the one highlighted by the Dutch.
