Belize ending all offshore oil drilling

The Central American nation of Belize, in a move to protect the largest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere, has banned the offshore extraction of oil and gas in its maritime territories.All operations to extract offshore oil and gas in the Caribbean Sea bordering the tropical country have been permanently banned

But 'permanent' largely just means until someone else it in power...

According to the actual legal documents, they're only really banning 15% of their marine territory ...

I don't think it is about love for environment but it is economy. The tourism contribute up to $237 million a year to its economy. The fishery provides food and employment for nearly 190,000 people. I don't believe oil can beat that

But it's only a part of its maritime territory. Sounds like a rational move given the areas banned.
