Once an oil-rich nation, Venezuela’s economy has been crippled by the socialist policies implemented by Maduro and his predecessor. Almost 90 percent of Venezuela’s population live below the poverty line and more than half of families are unable to meet their basic food needs, according to Mercy Corps, a humanitarian group. The U.N. estimates that by the end of 2019, 5.3 million refugees and migrants will have fled the socialist regime in Venezuela.

“Socialism has so completely ravaged this great country that even the world’s largest reserves of oil are no longer enough to keep the lights on. This will never happen to us,” Trump said as the crowd cheered in response.

“Socialism promises prosperity but it delivers poverty. Socialism promises unity but it delivers hatred and … division. Socialism promises a better future but it always returns to the darkest chapters of the past,” he added. “That never fails. It always happens.”

According to a book "the rise of disaster capitalism" more than half of the population is forced into drug related events due to economic reform introduced (esp after 1979). Poverty is induced. The policy let the poor die trying or dealing with drugs..... Here's the summary of the book and a review from someone:
