Is the World Ready to Go Cold Turkey on Oil

Sports cars and muscle cars use up a small percentage of the gasoline used. They could also use E-85 ethanol or methanol. Large vehicles such as pickup trucks, SUVs, buses, minivans, and full size sedans use up most of the gasoline. Many sedans are being discontinued in the USA for small SUVs. So, no need to go cold turkey, just change drugs (fuels). Of course, natural gas could fuel any vehicle from Fiats to Ocean liners so that is an option, and it is far more abundant than oil.

Electric vehicles are faster than 90% of muscle cars. There is a need to add loud, impressive sound effects though. Maybe a form of vaping smoke from behind.

Not likely.  World oil demand growth is still positive for quite some time, especially in the emerging markets.  Economic growth takes a lot of energy to sustain.  Mature markets, as they transition to renewables, will flatten and go into decline, but that decline will not offset the positive growth in the rest of the market until those emergent markets start to mature and demand less energy.

"Shame, because with a global population tipped to reach almost 10 billion by 2050, and our hunger for energy growing all the time,"

World population in 1800, around 1 billion.

World population in 1904, around 1.6 billion.

Approximated world population in 2019, 7.7 billion.

So perhaps the root cause of all this 'running out of resources' issue is the recent population explosion.

The elephant in the room...
