Theresa May Declares War On Plastics

Recommended Posts

T.M. vows to end all plastic waste by 2042. It includes "plastics-free" aisles in supermarkets and tax on takeout containers.  Is this realistic?

It might be realistic if supported with legislation.

It wasn't so long time ago when we thought paper was bad because it was killing trees. At the same time plastic was good. And now, plastic is bad. Can't wait to see what's next.

Next is peanut butter in glass jars again. We've been there before.

I think Teresa has bigger problems in her country to deal with right now than "plastics-free" aisles in supermarkets.

Paper cups, which are usually lined, are much harder to recycle than foam cups (plastic). I think it's time people stop posturing and campaigning on issues that might have the potential to ruin the planet, throw bias to the wind, and find out which way is the best way forward.  I think rarely is declaring a war on anything pragmatic and sensible. And painting products, industries, groups, etc as villans is childish at best.

Why must we have such ridiculous extremes? And why must we make up our minds and then desperately search for the science to back it up, instead of looking toward science and economics first?

Plastics are the lifeblood of many industries, including the medical industry and more. Find a substitute first, then let's talk about banning it. Take a lesson from China..doing away with something before the replacement is viable is a very bad idea.

This isn't a war on plastics, it's a war on oil, and a stupid political move devoid of reason. Paper products have a much much bigger carbon footprint than plastics. Is she proposing banning cardboard, plastic, and every form of packaging too? If not, why not?

It looks like just another political promise, packed in a lot of worries and without any real action.

All of this is overstated. We are hugely dependent on plastic and oil. The beginning could be sieving plastics from the ocean, but reverting to paper bags is also very environmental unfriendly.

The  problem is that we are focused too much on global warming is keeping us away from the real problem - pollution.

Good luck with that. I can understand it's tough to constantly be in the spotlight because of the Brexit disaster-to-be but Russian submarines and war on plastic bags? That's desperate.
