Norway Walking Away From Billions of Barrels of Oil in the Lofoten Islands

Recommended Posts

Western Europe’s biggest petroleum producer is falling out of love with oil. The opposition Labor Party decided to withdraw its support for oil exploration offshore the sensitive Lofoten islands in Norway’s Arctic, creating a solid majority in parliament to keep the area off limits for drilling.

The dramatic shift by Norway’s biggest party is a significant blow to the support the oil industry has enjoyed, and could signal that the Scandinavian nation is coming closer to the end of an era that made it one of the world’s most affluent.

I dont think you can read to much into this. The opposition towards drilling there doesnt primarily come from fear of climate change, but becouse the scenery in Lofoten is astonishing. Now drilling rigs operating many miles offshore probably wouldnt impact the scenery, but nevertheless thats where the opposition comes from.

I can assure you that the oil sector in Norway still stands strong. Sure we care about the climate, but we care more about our fat wallets. The political parties that in general are opposed to the oil sector only has like 10% of the vote.
