Do Renewables Have a Chance in the Mideast?

A Siemens report on the Middle East's energy prospects until 2035 says gas will be toe dominant power generation fuel. There are solar power capacity plans in Saudi Arabia. But can renewables really compete with fossil fuels in the Middle East where production costs are so low?

It can. High population growth means higher demand for electricity, and not only can renewables compete, but they need renewables to meet this demand.

But how many have the money to pour into large-scale renewable installations? Except the Saudis, that is. And to get money, they need to pump oil, and if prices remain higher, solar and wind will be less competitive, and so on.
