Why Doesn't Anyone Care about Ballistic Missiles Fired from Yemen into Saudi Arabia?

Recommended Posts

Every day I find it astonishing that Yemen is of virtually no interest to anyone, including the markets. When one of these ballistic missiles fired from Yemen into Saudi Arabia hits a target that matters, it's instant WWIII. Still, the markets (and the media) pay no attention to this at all. Is it because no one understands what's going on in Yemen? Are we too lazy to learn?

Exactly. It's complicated and some of us are Millennials who only like to know things that are immediately obvious from the headline. Once we have to muddle through a bunch of complex alliances and whatnot we're lost. :)

That's a bit disheartening. So we should just all bury our heads in the sand in the woeful knowledge that you Millennials will be running the world soon?

Ok, I'll bite. (I fully admit it's a bit scary that Millennials will be in charge of everything soon enough). Can you give us the Cliff Notes version (or the Google headline version)?

Fine. Yemeni ballistic missiles have been regularly reported to have hit targets across the border in Saudi Arabia. Part of the reason it doesn't get enough media play is that the Saudis quash it. There's no one there across the border to verify, and the Saudis rarely admit to any of these missile 'receptions' ... They did in November when they claimed to have intercepted a missile from Yemen near Riyadh (that's the capital). That's a bit close for comfort. So what if it hits an Aramco facility? Or a major civilian target?

That's what will make the difference. So, the answer to your question is: They haven't hit anything major yet. Unlike Saudi missiles. Yet the humanitarian crisis in Yemen was also neglected for a very long while by the media. It's not geopolitically correct because the Saudis look very much like the bad guys there. Same old, basically: "Yours are terrorists, ours are freedom fighters."

And now reports are saying that the Saudis have pledged $1.5 billion in aid to Yemen ... destroy and rebuild. It's a bill I can't imagine the Saudis can afford right now.
