Tesla’s New Solar Roof To Cost As Much As a Shingle Roof And Electricity Bill

Recommended Posts

Elon Musk is suggesting that the new version of Tesla’s solar roof tiles will be even less expensive and it will roughly be the equivalent of the cost of a comp shingle roof and the electric utility bill, which the solar roof will slash through solar energy generation.

When Tesla launched its Solar Roof Tiles in 2017, the automaker said that they would start volume production and installation in 2018. In a recent shareholder’s meeting, Musk said that the company was forced to delay volume production in order to meet very stringent requirements. The tiles not only need to look good, but they also have to be cheap and last for at least 30 years.

Taking this with a brick of salt. Renewable.math rarely adds up. Do they include the cost of the power inverter, wiring and Installation? Probably not. The tiles do look good tho. Will they last 30 years? Maybe. Will they work 100% after 30 years?? Hmmmm. Wind turbines have proven their lifespan is less then predicted.

Have they tested them in hail or strong wind? Also I would write off these as bei g practical anywhere it snows. Months every year of negligable output.

But you never know. You can definately virtue signal to all your neighbors how wealthy you are with this roof at a minimum.

That would be a big development if does happen, which I doubt. The cost difference between a shingle roof and a tile roof is quite significant. But cost of panels is only a small portion of the total system cost (roughly 15%).  The state and local incentives play a huge role in whether your system can pay for itself or not. Also if you live where bad weather is often, you could easily spend much more on a much larger system trying to get the same output as someone else with a smaller system in more optimal conditions.
