California to get 5 million zero-emission cars by 2030

California Governor Jerry Brown signed executive order planing to have 5 million zero-emission vehicles on the road by 2030. The new goal expands a previously issued executive order that called for 1.5 million zero-emission cars in California by 2025. There are currently 350,000 zero-emission cars in the state -- a big jump from 25,000 in 2012, according to Brown's order. About 5% of all new car sales in the Golden State are zero-emission.

No, you don't understand real motive. California's stringent air regulations are driven by the over population of the area. The atmosphere there cannot deal with reasonable rates of pollutant emissions and must be stringently regulated. Even with that, the area remains marginally in compliance with health-based standards and certainly is not cleaner than other areas in the country.

I am speaking about the future, not the present or past. Federal govt forcing a lower standard would obviously be health-hazardous.

 There is no such things as a “zero-emitting” vehicle and  a ban would add costs to already-stretched households and expose Californians to risks especially during natural disasters when power grids often fail and EVs can't be charged.

So the plan is to  get all EVs? In my opinion there is no reason to accelerate the EVs adoption rate given the insignificant  gains. Given that we are also have an increased saturated CO2 level, further decreases in CO2 emissions have a reduced payback, which means that this will not aid California or the US.

Even in the most coal-heavy states EVs are much better than gas cars.  Every gas car taken off the road means cleaner air for them -- even if they personally are not driving the EV.

Even Norway with its huge subsidies on EVs have only achieved 20% now and they can just get funds from their oil business tax funds. This will hit the poor more than rich silicon valley guys.

Actually you're wrong. They are at 50%+  and going up. A huge part of the missing 50% is because you can't really get an electric with a tow hook which is almost a standard on Norwegian cars.

The greenness of the electric car is only improved if the greenness of the grid and power plants is markedly improved. It's a a common process and a circle..
