Chinese Forces Are Staging at the Hong Kong Border

Recommended Posts

(edited)

It's hard to believe China would storm Hong Kong to put down the protests given the repercussions it would have for its economy, unless the CCP felt its power were truly at stake. But then this is China so they may well move in.

Remember that little square in Beijing a few years ago where the tanks and troops rolled in to put down a peaceful protest?

What makes you think the Politburo would bat an eye over killing a bunch of Hong Kongese?

Did you read my post? I think the time and location (Beijing vs Hong Kong) are different. I'm not saying the CCP wouldn't move in but would only do so if they believed their power was in the balance.

China has a lot at stake. It wants to replace the US as the indispensable nation. A bloody put down of protests in Hong Kong could potentially be the tipping point and cause a realignment of most major nations' relations with China. And what effect would this have on mainland Chinese? The images will be impossible to keep from them. Could that spur protests on the mainland and bring the downfall of the CCP?

These are unknowns that the CCP must consider in weighting it's actions. This isn't 1989.

If China are not seen to be “fixing” their own back yard they will lose a lot of face, very big deal for Beijing. Problem is the new generation of Hong Kong and Macau cannot be paid off or scared into submission. The Umbrella Movement is the perfect tool to dismantle the big red machine a blameless mass of forward thinkers.

China seems to be painting themselves into a corner recently with the situation in Hong Kong, the trade war, the ongoing issue with Taiwan, and the continuing confrontations due to the Nine Line Map in the South China Sea.
