Boris Johnson’s government is shuffling towards a gigantic cliff edge which has nothing to do with Brexit. The looming disaster can be summed up in one word: renewables.

Opinion piece... That specific outtage is not known. 

Future?  In fairness, if anyone in the world can make wind power work, it is Ireland/UK or Chile.  Just that small problem when the wind blows only a little bit or not at all...  All comes down to energy storage.  In the UK's/Irelands case, they have to store power for a short period of time as high pressure zones longevity is near non existent.   And, UK can't do pumped Hydro, no mountains, so in a word, they are screwed.  Maybe if they do reversed pumped hydro. I would love to see those seals though.... Good luck on that one...

Ron - this was as much attributable to a large gas fired CCGT* tripping. 

Scientists have said the blackout was not caused by the use of wind generation in the power network. They believe the disconnection of Little Barford gas-fired power station, in Bedfordshire, and Hornsea offshore wind farm, off the coast of Yorkshire, triggered the outage.

Prof Tim Green, the co-director of the Energy Futures Laboratory, at Imperial College London, said Little Barford was the first generator to disconnect, followed bythe Hornsea disconnection two minutes later.

But I would agree there is too little inertia in the system now to mop up sudden falls in output caused by an instant disconnection. Whether Batteries in the long term will resolve this is open to question.

Lightning strikes caused the power cut. Could happen to any generating plant.
