A Greenland without ice sheets is valuable property.

He said he even used his considerable artistic talents to depict Trump body-slamming the queen of England, Bernie Sanders stealing kids' Halloween candy, and even create a fake new VeggieTales character who is a marijuana plant.

The Fake News Police then showed up at The Babylon Bee's headquarters and hauled away their team of writers and editors. Their computers were seized as evidence, though reports indicate they attempted to destroy phones, hard drives, and over 30,000 fake news stories before authorities arrived.

In another thread you posted a link describing how Denmark overruled Greenland in case where Greenland politicians wanted Chinese investment in Greenland and Denmark said no. 

Friends that participated in exploration activities in Greenland 5 - 6 years ago used to joke about that if oil ever became commercial in Greenland the place would become "cold Nigeria"... 

p.s. Greenland will definitely vote on independence sometime in the future.

On the other hand this IS a good time to look at real estate in Greenland if you have free money.  Once the ice sheets melt, the place is going to boom if only because of oil exploration and tourism.  Looks like Lief Erickson's dream is finally going to come true.

Greenland is already independent. Greenlanders would need to notify Denmark that they were applying for US statehood (if they wished to be a state). Congress would then vote on admission. However, there are a few obvious problems.

One is that 54,000 Greenland citizens would get two senators, therefore the idea that they would be a state would be politically a non-starter in Congress. They would have to be absorbed as a possession, similar to the US Virgin Islands.

Another is that the US would then become the second largest country after Russia, trading places with Canada. This would instantly impose all kinds of service and jurisdictional infrastructure requirements, similar to other populated 'possessions' such as Puerto Rico and Guam. Furthermore, those that wanted to leave as a consequence would need to be resettled in either Canada, Iceland, Norway, or Denmark, depending on circumstances. It's also possible that the US could take possession of a 'chunk' of Greenland that is entirely unpopulated. This would require the construction of a city for all the said administrative services from 'scratch'.

Since the US responsibility for this would lie with Congress, it's likely they would see it as having a lower priority than other matters. None of this would get done during the duration of the current Administration, in any case.

Don't have much time today, so will try to summarize quickly - basically Social problems like alcoholism, various forms of abuse is completely rampant in Greenland and a very large part of the small population is only focused on day to day living. As mentioned above Greenland had at one time accepted Chinese investment but was overruled by Denmark. Sadly, there is ample room for the politicians to play the corruption game because of the above problems

I don't think anyone, is talking statehood. One million per would be way too high per person but could be the sale price of the territory. Certainly there would be expenses for the territory but mining and other industries would make it a good deal for any country that could afford to develop Greenland. President Trump will have to win a second term to make it happen. He would also need congress backing him up.

Here's the underlying problem:  those Inuit, weeing the way the USA throws money around, are likely to demand much higher resettlement costs.  What do you do if they decide that they have had enough of the Frozen North and would like to retire in a nice penthouse on Park Avenue, New York?  Last I heard they were running at around $38 million each. 

Add that up, and now you are talking Aircraft Carrier Fleet money.  At least.

Next ice age is in 400 years, if historical events are any guide.  Expect an ice sheet at least 5,000 feet thick across Chicago.  Figure on two miles thick over Greenland.  The long-term prognosis for the planet is substantial global cooling.  Never mind the eco-warriors and their ideas about Global Warming and CO2.  It does not work that way. 

P.S.  Jolly Old England will be under a mile of ice, so you can forget about pricey London real estate.  Oh, well.

There is a good chance that mankind will destroy most of itself by then. Those who survive may be the closest to the equator. We are having a very cool August in Illinois. Far more rain than usual after a flooded Spring.

Yup, that is logical.  Unless man has developed a nuclear reactor design that can continuously melt the advancing ice, or tap into the heat inside the earth's crust, it will be an awkward time, for sure.  

Applying massive heat to the ice front to stymie its advance seems like the most probable solution.

Look at it this way.  All that fresh water can be drained down into the aquifers underneath Illinois, and piped to the Ogallala, to recharge them, to be ready for the next warming cycle!  Yup, never underestimate the ingenious Americans, they always come up with a neat solution.
