House Votes to Bar Arctic Drilling

 

 

The House voted Thursday to again bar oil and gas drilling in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, as Democrats seek to put Republicans on the record on tough environmental issues for the 2020 election.

The legislation by California Democratic Representative Jared Huffman would repeal a law passed by Republicans in 2017 that ended a 40-year-old ban on drilling in the protected wilderness area and instead mandated lease sales in a coastal portion of the 19-million-acre refuge. It was approved by a vote of 225-193, with four Republicans voting in favor of the legislation and five Democrats opposing it.

“The Trump administration is now recklessly rushing to ruin the Arctic refuge with oil rigs,” Huffman told reporters. “Overwhelmingly, Americans don’t want this to happen.”

The bill caps off a week of anti-drilling legislation. The House voted Wednesday to limit drilling in U.S. coastal waters, including an effort to permanently ban rigs near Florida.

The measures have virtually zero chance of passing the Republican-controlled Senate, but the Democratic challenge to President Donald Trump’s pro-drilling agenda arises as voters say climate and other environmental issues are of increasing importance to them.

House Republicans have countered by offering an energy bill of their own they said would create jobs and lessen dependence on foreign adversaries, while warning Democratic restrictions would lead to increased energy costs.

The Republican measure would give coastal states a 50% share of oil and gas revenue from the Gulf of Mexico and allow states to take over permitting functions.

“America is rich with energy resources, and developing them will create jobs, strengthen our economy, and protect our national security,” said Representative Paul Gosar, an Arizona Republican.

Apparently Democrats are bought off by Russia.  Because Russia will lay claim to pretty much the entire Arctic region for oil & gas, and Democrats apparently want to freely hand the Arctic over to Russia.

Take a look at Deadhorse, Alaska and Tuktyuktuk in Canada on the artic circle and you will see why the greenies are hugging polar bears (no trees up that way), I think there is enough oil being produced at the moment without venturing into these reserves, im no tree hugger but there has to be a limit.

Ok fair enough but it's kinda suggested voters concerned about loads of issues and examples. What kinda % are we talking in America that is actually concerned by the oil industry?  (while using their oil based products all day everyday).

For example, stop using China production then and save all that transportation? But Trump still the bad guy, whatever he does.

Entire Interior Department needs to be abolished with all federal lands being handed to the States they reside in.  Should have happened at statehood.  It is absurd that there is a BLM/NFS etc. 

PS: Ok, keep the NPS, but all funds for the NPS comes from the local state

Californians aren't real Americans any way, I think most non Californians would agree? The list of oil based products is endless and they would be the first ones to be whining. All those fancy vintage cars that don't rust what do they run on steam (coal fired), if oil disappeared tomorrow what would happen, Mad Max would become a Hollywood reality.

If you care, cut oil out of your lives. Oh, you can't. If you care, stop buying anything from abroad. Become a vegan. Become Amish. Don't go on international holidays. Cycle everywhere. Car share. There are hundreds of things you could do and I bet they do none of them. Ooh I bought some low power bulbs.

Trump administration rolls out final environmental review for Arctic Refuge oil leasing

Today, the Trump administration took one of the last steps to allow oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. 

The Interior Department has released its final environmental analysis for oil lease sales in the northernmost 1.6 million acres of the Refuge, known as the Coastal Plain. 

In its final environmental impact statement, the agency selected a preferred option that would offer close to the entirety of the Coastal Plain to oil leasing, rather than a different alternative that would have put certain portions of the refuge off limits in order to help protect caribou habitat.

“After rigorous review, robust public comment, and a consideration of a range of alternatives, today’s announcement is a big step to carry out the clear mandate we received from Congress to develop and implement a leasing program for the Coastal Plain, a program the people of Alaska have been seeking for over 40 years,” Interior Secretary David Bernhardt said in a statement.  ...

 

... And today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill that would once again block oil development in the Refuge. That legislation is largely symbolic, as it has little chance of passing the Republican-led Senate. Still, it sends a strong signal regarding Democrats’ position on drilling in the Refuge ahead of next year’s Presidential election.

With the release of the final environmental review, leaders at Trump’s Interior department aim to let oil companies bid on land in the Refuge before the end of the year.

America has enough natural resources and manpower in the ability to grow seed manufacture and supply everything Americans need within our borders! It's a load of crap to credit/blame Obama. From a China perspective it starts with Nixon, but the race to China by big business to gut American manufacturing and become a nation of brands and design only really got going under Clinton. The ugly reality is on globalization and the federal reserve issues, there wasn't a nano-meter difference in the policies of Bush41, Clinton, Bush43, and Obama, the post Cold War presidents. There were differences in each of those administrations, but not of significance on trade and the fed.

Today there is a genuine difference in what Trump is trying to do. I applaud much of the intent, cry at the likely effect of going it alone as others we deal with will take advantage. Fortunately for now, the global herd of money still finds the USA the best place to be. Consider the other options, the EU, China, Middle East, South America, etc..

Google ANWR and every single picture you'll see is somewhere OTHER than the ANWR! If you've been there, it's a whole lot of nothing. Pictures showing thousands of caribou are a dead giveaway that it's Not ANWR. Nothing whatsoever for them to eat let alone it's a salty bog. But hey, Senator Kennedy took a huge bribe to create it in the first place, so let's all pretend it was always the case. Meanwhile we don't need a massive amount of oil TODAY, but who knows about tomorrow? New resources like ANWR will take decades to come online and given the decline curves for shale oil, decades might be all we have.
